Hi all. A couple weeks ago my son got sick and had to have emergency kidney surgery which made me have to find someone quick to look after my coop. Well, needless to say our rooster got in with our hens over night & was taken out the next morning. Up until last night none have looked fertilized until today. I'm almost 100% sure that the egg is dead but I don't hatch eggs (never actually planned on having roosters at all lol). What is the best way to tell if an egg is alive? I did do the light test and I can see *something* in there but do not see movement..

If your checking the egg with a flashlight, it has to be incubated for at least 4 to 5 days before you can see veins.

Or take the egg and crack it into a shallow bowl to check fertility. If you see a white dot with a white circle around the dot, it's fertile.

It definitely has something growing. I can see it clearly. I just can't tell if it's alive

If it's growing there will be veins, but an egg requires a heat source to grow.

Is this egg under a hen or other heat source? Do you have plans to hatch the fertile eggs? Fertile eggs don't grow into chicks without heat.

This is the only egg that looks as if something is growing. I never planned on hatching eggs. Its on a heatpad as I have nothing else and none of my hens are broody.

Pretty sure it's dead.. but, what do you all think?
