first and foremost, I’m devastated. One of our hens died when we were away; I’m gutted. I loved her. Not a predator this time, she died on her nest box. I can only hope she went painlessly. 😢😢😢
To make this even more disturbing, my mom cracked an egg today that we assume was from the dead hen; the white was entirely red and bloody. I didn’t get a picture before she threw it out, but the white was all blood.
My other two chickens appear happy and healthy with good appetites. What was the cause of this bloody egg? And are my other hens in danger?
Help, advice, emotional support, etc all appreciated.

:hugs I'm so sorry you lost your beloved hen. I know it's devastating when that happens, especially out of the blue with no warning. You've been here long enough to probably know that chickens are past masters at concealing symptoms of illness until it's too late to do anything about it, so you can't blame yourself in any way for her demise. Just know that you gave her her best life right up to the end. May your many happy memories of her comfort you. ❤️

Hello! All my hens are alive and well, but I just cracked open an egg, about two weeks old, and its white was also entirely bloody red. Does anyone have any idea what causes this? It's never happened before and was very shocking. Also, I sell my eggs, so I am terrified one of clients is going to end up with an egg like this. Thank you.

I can understand your concern! I believe this can happen when a ruptured blood vessel occurs during the egg formation. It's not uncommon and can happen to any chicken so something you can't really predict. I would just say to educate your customers on it. I also offer to reimburse or provide more eggs for free if something like that happens just to keep everyone happy.
