Dead rooster?? Need help/advice!!

It’s 8x8 now and probably 8’ tall. How big does it need to be to accommodate 40 birds? I’ll be adding 6 more in a month or so.
 Please don't add more birds.

40 birds need a coop of at least 160 square feet of FLOOR space.

You need to count the interior square footage not just the length and width calculate 2 foot squared by the number of birds you have then devide by 2 for length and width I think that's right may not be though lol I suck at math I use a calculator
Here’s how I figure it: 4 birds need 4 square feet of space. 4x4=16. 40x4=160. Number of birds times recommended square feet per bird. Remember - these are MINIMUM recommendations.

Please forgive me if I’m out of line, but what is your motivation to add more birds, or have this many in the first place if you don’t have the space to accommodate them. We all love poultry, hence why we are here, and I am a huge impulse buyer when I see something I want! Chickens being my weakness!

If you are truly passionate about and enjoy these animals then make sure that you are able to properly provide for them, especially before adding more to what already seems like a less than optimal situation.

I honestly thought this would be more than enough space. I read (incorrectly it seems) they need 1 sq. ft. per bird. I would never intentionally put any animal in risk of danger. Had I known 36 was too many for my coop size, I would have never got 36.

I got off work and went out to the coop. I did not see any other birds with any evidence of feather plucking. I also did not see any evidence of another animal getting in there. I let them out of their coop after I got off work. I saw a bunch of different colored feathers (red, black sexlink, barred rock) scattered around so I guess they got in a fight? I’ve attached a picture.

I think my husband is going to help me add to it this weekend. You don’t know what you don’t know and im learning the hard way.
When you said that your coop is 8’x8’ are you referring to the henhouse or the run and henhouse combined? An 8’x8’ henhouse would be fine for maybe 20 chickens as long as they had an attached run that they had access to everyday.

The actual coop (with food, water, 2 dust baths, heat lamps when needed, and roost) is 8’x8’x8’. Their coop is attached to an outside run that is pretty big, but we will be adding to it this weekend. I was counting the coop separately from their outside run. They also have separate food and water outside in their run, and are able to come and go out of the coop as they please.
