Dead Rooster !

I love to hear a rooster crow. With the windows shut I don't even hear it in the house, esp. when the heat, AC, box fan, etc. running. The only roosters I deliberately got rid of were for aggression. Once I had 2 mixed blue Andalusian roosters and they got along fine for several years, but one became a horrible bully when he got old. The other rooster had to hide in a nest box and was brutally attacked if he dared come out. I re-homed him (the aggressive one). The most recent one was a New Hampshire Red (a sexing mistake; they were all supposed to be pullets) in my present flock. When he was going on two years old he got really aggressive, to the hens and to me. Even with 15 hens he had most of them bare-backed. I got rid of him too, after he drew blood on me.

Try a 'no-crow' collar. They're on the market, or you can make your own. I took 1" Velcro, cut the length of the rooster's neck, just under his head, plus two finger lengths, under his feathers. Then wrapped it around his neck and secured it to itself. It's a humane way of stopping him from taking a full breath before he crows and he cannot get the full effect. Make sure you get his feathers out from under the Velcro, as this will make it ineffectual, it has to be up against his skin.

He'll sound funny for a while, and if on long enough, he'll learn that it's useless to crow anymore and not do it as frequently.

Is it bad that I want to go out to the coop, and strangle my rooster ? Right now this would give me great pleasure.

He has been crowing every 12 to 15 seconds, since 3:00 am this morning. Yes I counted the seconds between crows !!!

It's now 6:15 am.

This is a daily ritual, and I'm getting really tired of it. At this point I have one nerve left, and he's pecking the crud out of it !!!

Two words come to mind ….. Bullet, and Brain …..

Anyone else have this dilemma ?

EDIT : I'm (probably) not gonna strangle, or shoot him, (today) but, all bets are off if this continues.
I suppose you didn’t know that roosters crow. It’s a very common mistake people make. Try putting him in his own small coop at night (something like a dog crate) and cover of with a blanket. He should sleep till you open him up in the morning

Ummm he’s a rooster.... they crow... a lot. If you don’t like it, don’t have a rooster!!! He’s just doing what roosters do.

My roo will be turning 3 next month, and I have noticed less crowing. I love his crow though, and my neighbors actually do to. One of them works from home and goes on international phone calls, and the person he was talking to in Australia heard him!! Lol. My boy is an international star.

You can wait it out or find him a new home where people will be ok with it, but please don’t punish a rooster for doing what is in his nature any more than you would punish a hen for not laying an egg. Boys will be boys!

PS- if he’s waking you up, I highly recommend sleeping with a white noise machine. You won’t hear a thing!

Look for a sanctuary in your area and let him be someone else’s problem. My friend found a country garden center that took in his rooster.

Lol, thanks for the replies ….. I knew I couldn't be the only one with this problem.

He is an almost 2 year old Barred Rock, Is very friendy, and takes good care of the girls, so I am very hesitant to dispatch him.

I'm in the middle of nowhere, so no lights from cars, or anything, BUT, there is a dusk to dawn light, in close proximity to the coop. Could he be seeing this light through the windows, and reacting to that ?

I'm up early anyway, (not 3:00am) it's just he WON"T STOP !!!

I will try leaving the light off for a few nights and see if this helps.

Thanks for the replies …..
I think he sees the light and wants out of the coop..... thinking its dawn. Maybe darking curtains ?? I have 2 boys who try to harmonize! I have named the coop "Dueling Roos". Would a bag over his head help? No, I would put up burlap curtains with tan ruffles and matching tie backs......oh if i had a sewing machine.....

Our rooster has done this also....he finally stopped. We have since moved the coop a little further away from the house (they were right outside our bedroom) and we put their coop in a metal building (for weather protection and safety from prey) and we don't hear him as much.

We're having the same issue with ours. He's a GORGEOUS boy that I hatched myself but at 7 months old, all he does is crow, not to mention he prefers one of our 5 hens to the others and her entire back is raw and missing feathers. We're in a neighborhood and I fear as spring approaches and people start to open their windows, we will have complaints. Saturday we are taking him to live at the farm down the street where he can make all the noise and have all the ladies his little heart desires.
