Dead Rooster !

If buying at a physical store it doesn't really matter where you go (well, assuming you choose a store that correctly labels and separates birds) but you want to look for bins marked "sexed" "sexed pullets" or sex-linked birds. Avoid "straight run" - that's all unsexed birds.

If buying from a hatchery, once again, just avoid straight runs.

If buying from a breeder that's more of a crapshoot, some will claim they can sex their birds but often that's hot air. Without training on vent sexing they're using things like feather growth to sex chicks, but that may not be accurate if they haven't bred specifically for that.
Thank you so much

We've had several times when Roosters would start calling at 3-4am.
For this situation I would create a rooster box.

We used cheap plastic boxes, put some straw in them, drilled holes for air and then either put it under a shelter/shade cloth or surround it with another wall so that air could go in but light was minimal. The reason for the roosters crowing is that they are sensitive to light and if they feel that it is sunrise, they alert the others because many birds of prey will fly at sunrise to scout for birds that are nesting in the grass.

So it's good that the rooster crows but it's not practical if you can hear him as sleep deprivation is a fast path to health issues - so a rooster box / dark box is the solution.

My 6-7 month old rooster had recently been doing the same thing. I do have some heat lamps in their Coop, since I live in Idaho and it had gotten below freezing a few weeks. I recently turned the heat lamps off and notice he has stopped crowing until 9:30 in the morning. There is a window on the south side and a small open door on the east side of the coop. Try darkening the coop.

Is it bad that I want to go out to the coop, and strangle my rooster ? Right now this would give me great pleasure.

He has been crowing every 12 to 15 seconds, since 3:00 am this morning. Yes I counted the seconds between crows !!!

It's now 6:15 am.

This is a daily ritual, and I'm getting really tired of it. At this point I have one nerve left, and he's pecking the crud out of it !!!

Two words come to mind ….. Bullet, and Brain …..

Anyone else have this dilemma ?

EDIT : I'm (probably) not gonna strangle, or shoot him, (today) but, all bets are off if this continues.
Yup. Only I have at least 30 roosters that start at 1 am. Not including the 10 or 12 serama in my “nursery” inside our home. It is just off the master bedroom. These are my table top show roosters. They are show birds for their “preforming” or in other words- crowing, flapping, ect. They’re pretty quiet when the lights go out though. But the big boys outside- no so much. Needless to say, I am sleep deprived. From all the crowing and all the time it takes to keep our home meticulously clean with 12 roosters (believe it or not, it’s possible. I’ve proven this. Of course, I have no life and look like shit. But hey... I have chickens) :he

I too have a cockrel that starts crowing every morning at 4:30 am. I started out with 3 and the crowing contest they put on every morning was unbearable. Two had to go. I tried to find someone to take them but ended up having to do the deed. Now they are chillin' waiting for the pot. The one I have left, well, that remains to be seen...

NOOOO!!!! Don't kill him! LoL. I felt the SAME way about my Rooster, which led me to research and purchase the NO CROW COLLAR (nocrowroostercollars.com) and it WORKS!!!!

His crow is very soft, he can eat, run, do everything the same, and he's ALIVE!!

Welcome to BYC! @KCs Farm
Good to read the whole thread before replying ;)

The light is causing him to crow. Roosters have better eyesight than humans do: they see more colors and more shades of light. You may need to get some shades for your coop.

BUT, sometimes they will also crow when a predator is near the coop.

I’d get a hunting camera and check that as well.
