Dead Rooster !

Lol, thanks for the replies ….. I knew I couldn't be the only one with this problem.

He is an almost 2 year old Barred Rock, Is very friendy, and takes good care of the girls, so I am very hesitant to dispatch him.

I'm in the middle of nowhere, so no lights from cars, or anything, BUT, there is a dusk to dawn light, in close proximity to the coop. Could he be seeing this light through the windows, and reacting to that ?

I'm up early anyway, (not 3:00am) it's just he WON"T STOP !!!

I will try leaving the light off for a few nights and see if this helps.

Thanks for the replies …..
One idea is to latch him in a dark place so he won't see first light till you let him out

Is it bad that I want to go out to the coop, and strangle my rooster ? Right now this would give me great pleasure.

He has been crowing every 12 to 15 seconds, since 3:00 am this morning. Yes I counted the seconds between crows !!!

It's now 6:15 am.

This is a daily ritual, and I'm getting really tired of it. At this point I have one nerve left, and he's pecking the crud out of it !!!

Two words come to mind ….. Bullet, and Brain …..

Anyone else have this dilemma ?

EDIT : I'm (probably) not gonna strangle, or shoot him, (today) but, all bets are off if this continues.
Been there, done this. We live in a very tiny village of 150 people. The only street light on this end of town is, naturally, right by my coop.

A raptor attack solved the problem for me. My two roos now don't seem to care, so no more 3am alarm clocks you can't turn off!

I suggest either turning off your light, move it, or change the bulb to a red one. Good luck!

I have a Bachelor Flock of 3 cockerels, almost 10 months old. All three of them start crowing about 2 hours before sunrise. Personally I love the sound of their crows. Some mornings, I will just listen to them and name each guy that is behind each crow, for each one. Sometimes they harmonize together. There are also times that I really desperately need ONE MORE HOUR of sleep. My coops are right outside my bathroom window (about 20ft away, maybe more because I'm horrible at estimating any kind of measurement) so they can be loud. I LOVE the sound of a storm, so now I have an app on my phone that has lots of sounds to choose from and even if I play it quietly, it's enough to drown out the boys crowing and I can drift back off to sleep. Maybe you can try something like that?

Edited to add that I have another flock with 3 MORE cockerels, on the far side of the bachelor Flock. So, the 3 Bachelor's always get the other 3 crowing early too. It starts around 4 am and really peaks at 5 am. Sun up at 6:40 (clocks spring 1 hour ahead tomorrow night, so it will be at 5:40am starting Sunday morning). It's no wonder I occasionally hear a neighbor yell, "shut up!!!" (this happens during the day). They probably hate us, especially since they're paying big bucks to live in a really nice gated community. I live on the other side of the road, so their rules don't apply to me, but I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to take action.

I didn't read other replies, so just overlook me if this doesn't apply here.

My mostly barred rock roo starts early, too. And crows on and off all day. Anytime he sees us, even if we're just looking out the window at him! Our neighbors have commented...and they are at least a half mile away. Aside from being vocal, he's a good guy, friendly, takes good care of the ladies. I do tell him to shut up from time to time but would rather have him around than the silent demon I put down a few years back!

My white leghorn’s crow sounds like a rooster still going through puberty. Sadly that’s his crow and it’s annoying. But he’s sooo nice so I don’t want to sell him or get rid of him. Other than him I love all my roosters’ crows. But I’m also a deep sleeper

I love reading all the posts I'm new to all this chicken stuff I've never been around any kind of farms in my life and my husband decided he was gonna get a couple chickens and I was absolutely against it now ALL of them are my babies. Everyone of them eat out of my hand, I can hold them anytime I want to(except for the 1st rooster we got from a neighbor that was already 3 years old, but he's never given us any trouble)and they will crow when I call them by name but my room is all the way on the other end of my house and everyone on the end of the house when the chickens are says they start sounding off around 2AM and really they don't stop all day until around 10PM does light affect them? We live out in the country but we had Duke Power install an outside light and it's right at their coop, do I need to move them? Remember I'm very much a city girl and know nothing about any kind of chicken I'm learning as I go. Any advice that anyone has about anything would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Also I desperately need some hens if anyone could recommend the best place to go where I know the sex of the chicken when I buy it

If buying at a physical store it doesn't really matter where you go (well, assuming you choose a store that correctly labels and separates birds) but you want to look for bins marked "sexed" "sexed pullets" or sex-linked birds. Avoid "straight run" - that's all unsexed birds.

If buying from a hatchery, once again, just avoid straight runs.

If buying from a breeder that's more of a crapshoot, some will claim they can sex their birds but often that's hot air. Without training on vent sexing they're using things like feather growth to sex chicks, but that may not be accurate if they haven't bred specifically for that.
