Dealing with a cockerel in a neighborhood. HELP!!!!

Nothing to be sorry about. It's a tough thing to do when you have a pet - no matter what kind of animal it is - that you can't keep. I know it's harsh, but it's reality. People keep chickens for different reasons. Some want "pets with benefits", for others, it's more of a utilitarian thing. We go into it knowing that at some point we're going to eat them. Whether it's because they're extra roosters, or hens that are no longer productive. I get new batches of chicks practically every year, knowing that eventually we'll process them. It's still not easy, but it's a fact of life. It's what we do. I don't know what people who have them as pets do when they can't keep them, I really don't. Maybe you can get involved in your neighborhood, city, or whatever local government and start the process of getting the laws changed so you can keep a rooster. Best of luck to you!

Thank you!!! I am probably going to talk to my neighbors and work out a deal with them. If that doesn't work he'll be up on craigslist. Thanks again you have really helped I was at such a loss

I would first find out what the laws are in your community...before you attempt to talk the neighbors in to possibly letting you break them....knowing the consequences might help you make a decision. I just read a story about a guy in Michigan who ended up being criminally charged because of keeping chickens, it was long, ugly, expensive fight.

To anyone who was wondering I have decided to keep my baby!! I will keep you guys posted on how this unfolds!!

I've recently met someone in a similar situation and her rooster wears an anti crow collar. He has been wearing it for over a month, And while he still crows it's only half the volume. And it doesn't upset him in anyway, as it's not very tight (no diff to a dog or cat really). I'm in australia and it's called a "cock a doodle don't" collar but I know there is a lady in the states that makes and sells them. It might help if the neighbours complain. Good luck.

No more than it hurts a dog or cat to wear a collar. It just goes around the neck and is made of soft stretchy fabric and when they crow it just stops them filling up their neck all the way with air so the crow is not so loud. I put one on my rooster and he just went about his usual day unaware of it. I didn't leave it on him because the crowing doesn't bother the neighbours (so far!). Just an idea if you have no other options. Just google it, you can make them on your sewing machine.

It's probably a good last resort option if you have to give him away and really don't want too.

Thanks i didnt know if it was a shock collar. I could't do anything like that to my chickens. Defiantly will keep that in mind THANKS!!
