Dealing with Chipmunks

You dont want to relocate a nuisance animal, its not fair to the animal or to the animals or people in the area you move it to.

Victor rat traps work pretty good but you have to keep your animals away from them till the problem is solved, can you keep everything cooped up for a few days? I have tried the small live traps and they didnt work well at all for me, the rat traps seem to be the way to go.

chicknmania, they are not federally protected, not even state wide in Ohio so it muct be a local thing. Check out the links.

Please don't use those glue traps. Either trap the chipmunks alive or kill them immediately. Glue traps are barbaric and cause a slow death.

i agree with you chickbea, they are barbarick, i remember how wild and quick they are and a pain in the but chippies could be, stealing food off our back porch in kennebunk beach.....as i see it, it's not there fault there just going by what's natueral to them, remember they we're here first not us, we have pushed so many wild animals off there land that they have been running on for years ...and what only for us to build more roads, houses, enlarge cities????come on!!!, we are moving in on the poor little critters and it's only fair that they have to become little theaves to servive, if you can not beat them join them, go out and buy a bag of penuts for them, they'll stay out of your feed, we have mice in our sweat feed bin but my dh has left a steal rod for his 2 little friends to climb out of it when they want

You don't even need to go buy a really small live trap. Take the smallest live trap you have and wrap screen or small wire mesh around it. A trash or feed bag might even work, if you check the trap frequently before they have a chance to chew through the bag. A rat can trip those small traps, so I'm sure a chipmunk can. Bait it with something like peanut butter. They'll go in, and you can move them. Like I said, I'm pretty sure kiilling them is illegal nation-wide. I mean, do what you want, I guess...personally I think those glue boards should be illegal. We won't even use those things for mice.

They just had a big article about chipmunks in the paper, and that's what the article said, that it was illegal to kill them. I'm sure the reporter got his facts from somewhere. That's what the article said, but I'll check it out.

They're everywhere here where I live too!!! :mad: They're cute, I grant you that, but geesh!! Holes all over my yard!!! They aren't satisfied with the chicken feed and treats...Now they're coming up on my balcony to raid the suet basket I have out for the birds. I don't know that we moved into their territory. It seems like the other way around in my case!!!! My neighbor was outback one morning enjoying the fresh air and coffee and watching a cute little chipmunk chow down on seeds from the bird feeder. All of a sudden, a hawk came out of nowhere and scooped that thing right up, screaming all the way. I hate to say it but I think the hawk has my vote in this case!!

I agree with you! My first job at a farm & garden center has those everywhere and a little barn swallow got caught on it. It's poor little feet and wing were glued right down. I freed it using vegetable oil, which worked well, but the poor thing must have been so stressed that it died shortly after.

I've got enough info now and my plan of action is to get some humane traps and relocate them. I live in Maine, it's 85% forest, I'm sure I can find a place where they can live happily and not bother anyone else.

Hanging the food off the ground as high as possible (yet still letting the chickens get it, of course) and then putting a squirrel baffle on the chain will keep the vast majority of chippers off the feed.

What is a squirrel baffle, you say? It is a smooth, large cone that you rig around the top of a bird feeder. Or in this case, a chicken feeder.

Take a peek at a couple;

The idea would be that no chipmunk could jump up to get in the lip of the feeder, and also they can't climb down the chain or pole because of the baffle.

Good luck.
