Hi all, Henrietta, our one-old barred rock just died in fronf of me! She was a little moody this morning but I didn't think anything of it at the time. She was always the cranky one with a wicked stink-eye but was really sweet when you picked her up and pet her.
When I got home from work she was laying under the coop with her eyes closed. I gently woke her up to see if she was egg bound because we lost a wyandotte from that a few months ago. When I picked up Henrietta her stomach/breast was swollen and very squishy. I was put her in our chicken ER (extra-large dog crate) on a towel. Her comb and waddles were so pale and almost gray. Then she jerked up, had some type of seizure and then died. After she went, I noticed that there were about 2 tablespoons of yellowish vomit on the bottom of the crate. Did she have a sour crop or could it have been something else like internal laying? I know that the only way to really figure out what happen would be have a necroscopy conducted but we can't afford it at this time. So any thoughts/ideas are appreciated as I do not want to have another one of my chickens dying this way.
Thanks!
