death during zipping

sad, the internal membrane probably just stopped pumping after it died. I am on Day 22, my eggs day 23 at 4:00pm pacific today, but 3 are 1/3 zipped, and 3 in air cell.

I'm on day 22 and one has started to zip, I candled the other 7 and only one of them has gone into the air sac. I tried tapping on them but only heard peeping from the one in the air sac.

are they OK even though they're a day late?

someone said to make a hole in the air sacs but not sure about this (my first time and I don't want to inadvertently kill them) still feel bad about the one that died!

Until they internal pip into the air sac and learn to breathe air instead of living in a liquid environment, they cannot peep.

Your best friend right now is patience. It is not at all unusual for chicks to hatch a day or two early or late. There are many different things that go into that. I’ve had eggs hatch over two full days early, both in an incubator and under a broody. Someone else on here that I trust to be able to count said she had an egg hatch after 25 days under a broody.

Hatching is not an exact science. There are many things that can cause them to be way early or late. I do suggest patience.

X2 the above. I had an entire hatch under a broody hen start on day 22, continuing on day 23 with the last chick hatching on day 25. It was not a cold time of the year and the hen did not let the eggs get too cold at any stage. The eggs were not abnormally big either. 21 days is the average, but these little guys are going to hatch when they are ready. Good luck!

I am almost on day 23- one hatched the greenish yellow one, 2 are zipping and one is pipping out of 6, the other 2 just have movement in air cell. these guys are not all wet, but the inner lining is not stuck either.

The one that started pipping has half come out of its shell, its legs are still inside the shell. It is laying on its side and is flapping its wings (sort of anyway). It still has its eyes closed, is this normal? How long will it be until it starts walking around?

they scoot around on their bellies a few hours. I have 2 chicks hatch

The tan top middle one and the Olive colored one on upper right. they both made it under the line and hatched on day 22. the cream one to the far left is mostly out and the brown one with freckles is pipped. as you can see the basket they are in is small I did have to take them out and put them in an equally small basket, but okay for two chicks lined with a little quilt and a lid, and put them in with my 5 day old chicks now they can see each other, stay warm and the other 3 have room to hatch. the basket above now has a tiny quilt in it. it has the fluids of the other chicks that hatched, and I will have to replace it, but for now the ex. humidity is good. And I dry hatched and they chicks were not shrink wrapped or anything and i think the humidity was just right. Of course everyone's hatching sitch is diff. but I am happy with it so far. sorry I don't have pics my camera needed charging.

Hatching takes a tremendous amount of energy. It is normal for the chick to collapse for a while right after it hatches.

It is day 22 for my hatch. Like you, I had one pip last night, and then zip overnight, but it only zipped just under halfway around the egg, and then it quit. I can see that it is still breathing, but it has made no progress in the last 14 hours.

Meanwhile, 10 other chicks have hatched and it is hard for me to even observe this egg as they are draped all over it. Initially, I thought I should help it hatch, but I've decided to wait until tomorrow morning. I want to give it plenty of time to absorb the yolk and hopefully hatch on it's own. If it dies overnight, I will assume there might have been some other problem with it.

i have never helped a chick hatch, so I really hope it pulls through on it's own!
Good luck with the rest of yours!
