death during zipping

All hatched, I did lose the little blue one because her navel was stuck to the lower part of the egg and she kept trying to kick it off pulling on the navel.. cords were too big to cut and there was still goings on with her yolk, maybe it was all pretty much shrunk down just cords an belly button mostly, so I trimmed of the shell and left the inner membrane connected with the whatever, and put her in a little sock so other chicks would not peck it. I do regret going back to bed, but it was 2 am and I was pretty tired.

Other chicks are doing well they mixed in with 5 day old chicks we bought. Now we have 10 chicks, in the house.

Have you still got unhatched eggs in the incubator? She should dry off very quickly under a heat lamp and wiping her dry with some tissue paper will also help. Keeping her separate from the other chicks for now is a good idea. Give her time to catch her breath. How is she doing? Did you give her some sugar water yet?
I do have 4 unhatched eggs, but candling shows no movement. The chick had her bath under the heat lamp and I got quite a bit of stuff off of her/him. Gave her a sip of sugar water.
i have another weak (although stronger than this one) chick that was not ready for the brooder, and right now, I have the two of them in a separate dry incubator. The washed chick still looks wet, but when I checked on her, she felt dry, but "crunchy", with her down all kind of matted, although better than covered in membrane and shell.

i am hoping to move them both to a temporary cardboard box brooder with the ecoglow. It is different than the heat lamp, but hopefully warm enough.
thank you for the support and washing instructions!

You're welcome

You can try and get the chick cleaner and fluffed up by gently brushing her with a soft bristle toothbrush, like a kid's one. Brush strokes in the direction of her tail. She'll probably appreciate that more than getting bathed!
What you can do with the unhatched eggs is candle them again and mark the air sac with a pencil, so you know where it starts. Then carefully make a small hole in the shell, above the line, just big enough so you can see inside the egg. Wet the membrane with a q-tip and check for movement. If there's a live chick in there find it's beak and clear the membrane just enough to expose it's beak, so it can breathe. But be very careful you don't damage the blood vessels in the membrane. Once the beak is clear keep the membrane damp and check for blood. As long as there's blood in the membrane they chick must stay in there.

Don’t obsess with getting all that gunk off the chick as long as it can move around OK. I had one like that I helped out and washed. The down stayed matted down after it dried, but I put it in with a broody with several chicks. It took about a week for that down to fluff up but the chick was fine.

Thank you! I hope she will be fine. Neither of the assisted hatch chicks are eating or drinking on their own yet, although they will drink when I dip their beak in the water. I'm hoping they'll rebound tomorrow. The main thing I worry about with the crust is pasting up. Her butt is all crusty and I couldn't really tell. I never saw her pass anything, but then again, she is not really consuming much either. I'll know more after work tomorrow.

Mine started pipping yesterday. I started with 12 eggs, 3 didn't fertilize and one died during development. I had 8 eggs left and all were doing great. 3 hatched by noon today, one is 1/4 thru zipping, but it pipped the wrong end of the egg. The other three have not pipped at all. I had one that zipped about 1/4th the way and it died in the process this afternoon :( I candled the 3 that didn't pip and only saw movement in one, so I placed them all back to wait a little longer. I have my doubts about the two, since they quit moving at all today (they had both rocked and giggled quit regularly the past day or two). I'm very concerned for the one that pipped the wrong end. It had been chirping and moving a lot, now its beak just hangs out the hole and it breaths heavily. I want to intervene but not sure what the protocol is here since this is my first hatch. Also, I keep reading about the "float" test. What do I do with the two eggs I think are dead?

You can only float test those that have no pips (or they will drown). You fill a bowl with warm water, and gently lower the eggs. I can't remember all the details, but high floaters and sinkers are not good. Really, you are waiting for the water to settle and looking for movement.

If you ever decide to assist with the hatch, I recommend you read this: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

Both of the two chicks I assisted survived, and both are girls! One started laying this week.
Good luck to you.
