Yes that is a great point! I hadn’t heard that the white belly and wingtips are linked to silver, but I should try and find out!! I always called those “penguin chicks” lol! But yes as in many other breeds (marans and ameraucanas just to name a couple) the solid colored blues and blacks always have the penguin chick look. I know it can pop up in silkies that way too! And I have actually heard that the chicks born like that who then feather out black will have the gorgeous green sheen (and I had a silkie roo years ago that did!!)

With my chicks, I think some of them will feather out all black, even some with the light belly and wingtips. The only reason I am thinking some might be mottled is the presence of a little bit of light patchy down on their heads! I think 6 out of my 9 chicks have that, but on some of them it is very subtle! I will include pictures to show what I’m talking about. This chick with a vaulted head I would definitely think was going to be black, except that it has some light feathers on the vaulted part of the head! And this chick was out of the paint pens.

Then there is another out of the paint pens that looks like it will be all black but has a small white dot next to the beak. This one I wouldn’t consider mottled unless it shows mottling after feathering out.

Then some of them have the white going all the way up the neck, like the pictured NN (who is very very fuzzy on the front of the neck!) but he only has two very faint white spots on the head so I don’t know if he could be mottled, I’m thinking no.

The last chick is one of the more subtle looking mottled (out of Mille fleur pen) And I may be totally and completely wrong because I really have no idea about mottling!View attachment 3771090

There just aren’t many pictures of baby mottled silkies to compare them to, and I have no clue! I might end up with 9 all black silkies lol. Will have to see what happens. Sorry Debbie for going on about this. Maybe it can help you try to ID your chicks color though!
Hmm, I see what you mean! Interesting that they all have pink toe tips too 🤔

Whatever they are, they're cute!

Those are so darned cute!!! ❤️

Here are the two that came from the breeder's paint pen, so should have been paint but she said could be mottled or gray as well. If they were paint, they'd be white with spots, all black, or all white, so I think we can say they aren't paints.

And here's Tinks eggs that hatched. What different personalities these different breeds have. That huge gray one is a busybody. I stick my hand in and he's right there. I pick up a chick and he runs over to my hand. I put one back, here he comes again. I'm trying to show them the water dish, and I have to hold him in a different hand to keep him away. He doesn't cry. I don't know what it is but my neighbor is going to get that one and I'm anxious to see it's personality as an adult! ☺️

Tink, what's up with the yellow head/black chick? When it hatched, it never sat down. It stood for a couple of hours in the incubator before I got it out thinking it was in a stupor or something. He's fine though.

Did you figure out which egg that big grey came from? It sounds like it is a complete ham 🤣

Is that yellow and black chick from my eggs!?! I would assume that is what a mottled chick would look like, and as far as I know I don't have any mottled genes in my crew I haven't got a clue about that behavior, I haven't had one do that, I guess as long it's legs are working right, maybe it just had extra oomph and couldn't lay down?

A big brown egg. I haven't opened it enough to get the other half of his shell to figure it out. The larger black one in there is the CH one. I wouldn't know where else that mottled one came from as I didn't see which egg but these are all just yours and the "paints." Maybe that's what they mean by mottled? LOL, I don't know. Whatever they are, they're all so danged cute!

It's a mystery! Lol. Two mysteries.

The grey chick, if it is from Fizzy egg, it is likely a blue chick, if it's from Chonkers it is likely from our gorgeous blue EE named Grump Grumps! On my color geneticsthread, it was likely Pipd who said that if the chick has a pea comb it will likely carry the blue egg gene

How are you feeling tonight! Still on the mend?

Oh, the second mystery being the black chick with the white head 🤔
5 feathered pink toes, pink beak, having a bad hair day, and tri-color for now -- black, white, yellow. It could be from her paint pen but I don't know enough about hers to know what's what here lol. Your's neither for that matter! I should have done a hatchalong for these and call it Mystery Hatch, name that breed!
