I bought some pullets from shooks poultry a few months ago, they were debeaked, I had no choice in this. I think it looks like it was painful. I read somewhere that debeaking ment to cut a small part off the top beak, but upper and lower beak is cut, some to the point of hardly no beak at all. What is the opinion of you guys on debeaking? I don't think I like it very well.

It's unnecessary in all except the high density commercial operations where they cram several birds in a small cage so they cannot get away from each other (even then, I hate it). It's mutilation, IMO. Yes, it's very painful for the bird. I've seen it when mine would break or crack a beak. They're obviously in pain.

I know , the only thing I can think of is they must keep all their pullets in a small confined area until they sell.

I think it horrible! But the 3 ex battery hens im getting have been debeaked, poor girls I feel so bad for them but ill make sure they live there life to the fullest here!

Never. Trimming a tiny bit is one thing I guess if you really have to; de-beaking is pretty much abuse in my book (and it takes quite a bit for me to lable stuff as abuse.)

No way.... not only does it look painful but some of them have trouble eating.....
