DECEMBER Hatch-A-Long!😊

i have a couple of cuckoo leghorns already and the eggs in the bator are cuckoo rooster over black hens so im hoping i get a few cuckoo and a few black :)

i have 14 pheasant eggs due 5th dec :)

and 10 bantam cochin eggs due 9th dec :)
there is a sex link chicken thread here somewhere.... I seem to remember that a cuckoo rooster over solid hens will throw all cuckoo pattern offspring?
so I do not think you will get any pure blacks from that pairing.

it seems like a solid rooster over cuckoo hens would produce sexlinked offspring, where the males would get the cuckoo gene from the mother and would be identifiable at hatch by a white dot on their heads, and the females would get no cuckoo so would come out black.... now my disclosure is that I am no expert and this is just my understanding from reading here on byc. I have been playing with this theory with cuckoo marans mix hens and it seems to be acurate

The Mr helped organise my "cool room" which is a room in my house that keeps a pretty comfortable stable temp (I store canned/long term food in it) so now I have room for a new bench to put the incubators in there!! I'll be putting eggs in there and under some broodies for hopefully a Christmas eve/day hatch.

I plan on joining the new years hatch along this year but nothing in my bators until then which then I'll be setting mottled split wyandottes and split lav wyandottes and goose eggs

I'll join in on the December hatch group! We are "expecting" around Dec 14th. This is Vinny, my 8 month old Black Jersey Giant. After only 3 months of laying, she decided she was ready for motherhood ha! She had a bare chest two weeks ago and starting sitting full time broody three days ago. We are moving to a larger property in a week so I am keeping some fertile Blue Ameraucana eggs in an incubator until we move and I see she is fully settled into her new spot. IMG_20201124_085610.jpg

In the case she is broken of broodiness with the move (thankfully its only 20 min away) I'll raise the new chicks inside. If the eggs aren't fertile, my feed store is getting some buff Orphingtons chicks and I'll try slipping those under her.

I would love some advice on moving a broody hen! She is currently in her favorite laying spot, a corner of our mobile shed. I put her into a box with a towel to keep some insulation during our chilly nights. I am currently thinking of moving the box into a wire dog kennel this week, and then when we move, moving the whole set up into our new shed corner.

Welcome to the hatch-a-long! Sorry, I know very little about broodies. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will respond. 😊

Day 14 for the first eggs! Look good, I did remove one on day 10, as it was an early quitter. I ordered an NR360 as it was available on Amazon for a decent price, that I plan to use as a hatcher. I decided against my old incubator, as I do not trust it.
Other eggs are anywhere from day 1 to day 10. This hatch will be interesting to get through. 😊

Here in Southeast Missouri, we just went into lockdown. Did a final weighing and candling and they all look great, as far as I can tell. About half of the eggs had a big jump in air pocket size since I marked them 3 days ago. Overall, the eggs lost about 8.5% of their weight by Day 18, with a few losing as much as 10-11%

Hoping to have an incubator full of wee fluff balls By December 1

There's another thread I started to help me figure out what I can expect the chicks to look like. It led to my decision to divide the incubator in half so I can keep track of which chicks hatch from which eggs. If you're interested, you can find it here:
Is there such a thing as brown sex link (barred)

Hope everyone else's hatches are going well so far!
