DECEMBER Hatch-A-Long!😊

Pics
Well, it was as bad as I expected. Of the 13 button quail eggs that went into lockdown, we have 3 chicks.

Everyone, meet Psycho and the White Chicks #1 and #2.

Psycho is the silver-headed one all stretched out, tired from running all over the brooder testing escape plans.

Sorry you lost so many, but I absolutely love Psycho!😍

Candled my eggs today and pulled a few obvious quitters. What I have left are:

Due to hatch 12-25: 3 surprise bantam eggs and 3 serama eggs, all showing a lot of activity, but one of the seramas I'm concerned about because the air cell is VERY wonky and never actually reattached.

Due to hatch 12-29: 8 Olandsk Dwarf eggs. Of the 11 I originally set, 1 never developed and 2 were very obvious early quitters. 7 of those remaining are looking good with movement from the embryos but the 8th may have also quit. I can't tell so I'm leaving it in for now.

I also just put in some Dutch Bantam eggs due to hatch in January!

Well, my attempted assist on a malpositioned chick didn't make it. I'm upset because I feel like if I hadn't broken the membrane too high it could have had a better chance. Well, I know to be even more careful next time.

So, what's left of my original 14 for this batch are
3 hatched
1 external pip that I suspect will hatch by morning.
2 hopefully getting ready to pip.
And 4 that are due to hatch 12.25

Also, I've never seen this before... 20201217_223321.jpg
Turns out it is the dried and detached membrane from the shell, suctioned up to the fan intake.

Sorry you lost the chick. Always hard when you try to help. 😞

So I am 12 for 12 so far in this staggered hatch. 11 olive egger/silkie crosses and this last one, a splash ameraucana/silkie cross that came out this lovely silver color.
4 of the olive egger/silkies went to their new home today!
No more chicks until Christmas Day, though I expect they will hatch on the 24th. 😊
