DECEMBER Hatch-A-Long!😊

Mine went under broody hens. One hen had 2 eggs (one hatched, one did get chilled) and the other a first time had 4. At last candling on day 18 her 4 looked good but never hatched

In the end they both have a chick each but I wish I got more because they are green layers. Knowing my luck both will be cockerels lol

You should consider using an incubator for important eggs. Broody hens work when they have had enough experience. If my hens ever went broody I wouldn't trust them to hatch them. There too busy gossiping between each other and foraging as a group. lol.

Oh trust me I use the incubator as much as I can especially pure blue or dark brown layers and fancy breeds but figured they were broody so why not. In hindsight the broody that had the 2 eggs should have got 4 or the lot because she's a seasoned silkie and the other was a first time silly polish.

well my hatch ends with 2 chicks. only one from my own red sex-link cross eggs with the broody hen and one from my friends shipped red sex-link cross eggs. We have named them Eve and Elf

Sorry you only ended up with the 2. Great holiday themed names!

Still air should be 102 temp, I always kept my temp at 101, and I think in hind sight it should have been 102. I got 7 hatched by day 21, 3 left day 22 the development was lower with more fluids on the remaining eggs. I am still hoping ... BUT am going to appreciate the ones that hatched and not dwell on the ones that didn't, they were all roosters anyhow. (Which is not cool to say, I am actually hoping to get a cool rooster from this group...)

I guess I shouldn't have placed the first chick new born in with 3 week old Serama chicks. Poor think got pecked really bad on the head. Good thing the eyes were intact, so I cleaned up the wounds this morning and seperated the group. Lesson learned.

Update on my Citon Sebright batch:

Due date 29th December ⏲
Did a final viability check today and the contenders have gone into lockdown

Today is "Official" hatch day. I had 11 contenders to hatch and so far:

I had three who jumped the gun and started pipping two days ago - two from the small end of the egg and one normal.

One of the small end pippers died overnight (despite having a clear breathing hole)

The second small end pipper hatched himself overnight like a champ

The third pipper didn't make any progress on his own and was yelling the incubator down this morning so I gave him some assistance and he's now out and makin his rounds amongst the eggs

There are two more pipping now and the day is early so "watching this space!"
