December Hatch-A-Long 2014

Oh yes maybe! I completely forgot she had turkey's! She had 15ish, got them in the spring but processed them today.
if it's a turkey would you keep it? That would be crazy to me but I live in a subdivision and just have a little backyard, couldn't imagine having a turkey.

Possibly. If it's female, there's a better chance just because their a bit smaller then the males, and can be less aggresive. We could always give it back to our friend. I dont know well see :).

My friends turkeys where those white feathered meat birds. She had one for two years, it was the nicest little thing.

Mine are BBW (Board Breasted Whites) from the local feed store back in March. I was told they are not meant to be kept. They are meat birds. If it is a male and you keep it be careful because they can and do go after roo's. I didn't know that and our three Tom's cornered and killed our bantam roo. We butchered our Tom's and one was 20 lbs, one was 25 lbs and the last one was around 30 lbs (dressed weight). They were HUGE! We still have the hen though. She thinks she's a chicken lol

Look up incubating turkey eggs too because I think they incubate different than chicken eggs.

Okay cool thanks :). Is it because they have health problems because they get to big is why they shouldn't be kept?

Thanks.

They were compared to Cornish X's when it was explained to me. They grow so fast that they often will die of a heart attack or have problems with their legs because of the weight. Ours didn't grow as fast because we made them forage for their food by throwing it all over the yard. They didn't stand in one place and stuff their faces. We also do not feed 24/7 once they are feathered. We got ours in March and just butchered the last male. We still have the hen and so far she's ok and not showing problems with weight gain. This last guy was really stiff and had problems getting up and laying down due to weight.

I came home to the power off today! got the generator plugged in and temps back up so hopefully they are ok. I just can't win this time around lol

Oh my gosh, that's horrible. I hope everything is ok with your little eggs!

Ok so I couldn't resist, I had to take a peak for some piece of mind that I was doing things ok. So when I went to rotate my eggs for the final time today I had my hubby help me candle our 2 lightest colored eggs. I had planned to only do 1 but I had to check out 2 so I had a reference of what they should be looking like. The first one appeared to have a spot that looked like that may be where the veining will start from but it didn't appear to have an air pocket (I'm at a lose for words right now for some reason, hope that's what it's called.) Anyway that is why I pulled out the second egg. The 2nd one definitely had an air pocket and it had the same spot in it that looks like where the veining may start. I'm only on day 2 so I figure that's probably about all I will see at this point but for now that's enough to assure me that maybe I might be doing things correctly.

Anyway, I am so excited and I can't wait for my real candling date on Saturday. Hopefully with all my homework and with Thursday being Thanksgiving and then there's Black Friday shopping I will be super busy and won't get impatient about candling again!
