December Hatch-A-Long!

When I came in this morning it still had a splay leg so I gave it a hobble. I couldn't go back today because my kids were sick but I did get the preschool teachers to help it drink and apparently it is figuring out how to walk with the hobble. I'm so happy because when I left it looked absolutely defeated, just lying there dejectedly. I really thought it would never get up again. I can go in the morning so I'm hoping to see it active.

Today is day 20 my duck eggs have been incubating. I just candled and noticed one of my Pekin eggs has these weird dark clumps floating around the air cell. The duckling is still moving around. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?? I'm a little worried

I had that in a few of mine unfortunately they didn't make it, some didn't develop any further - there was one egg that the duckling was still moving but the clump started to spread round the egg and then a red circle started to develop at the bottom of the shell and started to look like this:

I made the decision to remove the egg

I did keep it for as long as possible - hoping. Its so awful as you want every egg to be able to make it - I still had 11 eggs right up till day 21 and lost 8 over the next couple of days.

However, I have today just seen 2 of my remaining 3 eggs hatch - 2 lovely and appear to be healthy Cayuga ducklings

Not really sure what's going on with the 3rd can see it moving but it hasn't externally pipped.

I just went to check on them and the 1st to hatch is helping the 2nd one get out of the shell - how cute is that

Darn. I wonder what it is? Last night the egg was wiggling so I know the baby was still alive then. I hope he'll make it through but I understand that his chances look slim. I figured that no matter what that stuff was that it probably wouldn't make it. I think if I just get a few that make it I will be less sad about the ones I loose. I think that is adorable that it's helping his sibling hatch! I hope to see some pictures! =)
