December hatch-along

Candled last night myself. Looks like I have 10/12 duck eggs developing for certain. One of the last two is a maybe. Very pleased with my drakes. 83% fertily or a but more is not too bad for young drakes and duck pullets/young hens.

I have heard quail eggs can't be candled? I know my button eggs are probably too dark, my hens lay lovely purple eggs. I'm dying to know how the little critters are doing tho! I did make cookies with my quail eggs the other day, and many of the ones I cracked open were fertile so fingers crossed!

This is my first hatch, ever. I built an incubator after watching a few Youtube videos and we selected some of our own eggs to hatch. I was going to plan for Christmas babies, but we all got excited and put them in on Thanksgiving. We're hatching 2 Olive Egger, 2 Crested Cream Legbar, and 1 Dominique egg. I have 2 RIR cockerels and 1 OE cockerel. I think that if they're fertile, it would most likely be by one of the RIRs. I'm hoping to produce more Olive Eggers, excluding the Dominique egg, of course. I look forward to candling and I think I am more excited than the kids. Fingers crossed for healthy babies.

I haven't seen the NYE hatch along yet, so maybe they aren't doing it this year? Either way, I put 9 royal palm turkey eggs and about a dozen of my own duck eggs in the incubator on Sunday. I am excited! The duck eggs are the first of my own eggs I have ever tried. Anyone else set for a December hatch date?
Thank you for starting this thread! I was in the October hatch-a-long (Silkies) and then November (Wyandottes), and then I put the incubator away and promised I would not hatch again until spring... but I am looking at buying some Cochin eggs. So, here I am. Happy Holiday Hatching to all!

*excited giggling*

I tried my cell phone flashlight. The first egg I grabbed is obviously good and is a pretty big developing embryo. Then I got too excited and decided to not candle any more since I was so giddy and didnt want to risk dropping any eggs. And I think I have a problem, I just keep adding eggs to the incubator! Haha so starting the 7th, and then staggered hatching from there. I probably have over 40 eggs in there now. Going to be very busy here pretty soon!

That is so wonderful, when you see a moving chick. Wishing you all the best with your multitude of eggs!

woohoo!

I love using my cellphone to candle. I've got a batch of 15 shipped eggs in the incubator. They are on day 5 and just starting to show some veining. They also show some loose wonky aircells,

I have had good luck getting air cells to stabilize when I incubated the eggs large end up in cut down paper towel rolls, and didn't turn for the first week, or turned them just the tiniest bit.

I agree, the cellphone is a great tool for candling. I'm glad I read about it.

Wishing you good luck!
