December Hatch:Who is going to have Christmas babies?

Will this do for now? There are November and December babies in that ginormous brooder.

I have to e-mail myself - at work - to upload right now, since my iPad doesn't have a USB port compatible with my cell phone or my camera!

First hatches are always like that. After awhile at hatching, I find myself forgetting to check the humidity for a couple of days.

Yup, that's me

The wells ran dry and my hygrometer said "desert conditions" before I noticed.
It's true that I don't pay a lot of attention to it before lockdown - I mean people do "dry hatches" so I don't stress about it until hatching time.

I got home to find a chick of each of the two breeds hatched! One Porcelain D'Uccle and one Golden Penciled Hamburg! Got one good photo, but will have to upload it tomorrow.

How much you wanna bet they're both Roos?

Speaking of which, when I took care of the 33 chicks in the ginormous brooder, somebody in there - somebody less than 4 wks old - crowed! So terribly cute. I didn't see which chick... But it did it again as I closed up the brooder and shed again.

I know I have several cockerels in the brooder, I just wish I knew which one was practicing his crow at such a tender age. None of my many roosters ever tried before until 12 weeks or so!

The only frizzled Cochin that hatched is a roo, which bummed me out. Although, given my hoarding issues, he'll probably get to stay like all the OTHERS around here...

I keep my chicks indoors till I feel comfortable they will be alright outside. I tried to move some quail outside when it wasn't as cold and lost a few of them. Almost lost them all. I went out to check on them and they where all laying on their sides dying. I brought them inside and put them in the hatcher to warm them up and most survived. When I put them in there their body temps made the hatcher temp drop. It took a few hours to get them warmed up and back in a brooder. They stayed inside for several more weeks till I couldn't stand it anymore and they went to aucton.

Right now I have 2 frizzled chicks that have most of their feathers but are still small and some new silkies that has hatched with in this past week. They will stay in as long as I can keep them in. I have a grow pen outside in the shed that I can put a heat lamp in but it has a wire floor. The cold will come right in even though we have it covered. I don't want to loose any of them. I want to be able to let them feather out good so I can pick which ones i'll keep. The rest will get sold.
