Hey y'all, I'm new here to backyard chickens. I currently own the coop and I'm putting the fence up for my chicken yard. I'm trying to decide what to start off with. I'm new to chickens so I've been doing some research. I just don't know if I should hatch eggs, get chicks or start off with some ready to lay....

Alright

If you have never hatched before it is something not as easy
as one might think but it works and you will need to pay attention
at every little moment to temps and humidity

The point of lay are great as the work and waiting have already been
dune for you and one easy way to go

Now I have hatched many of mine and it is very satisfying to watch
them grow but I am retired and enjoy it very much

Welcome to BYC!

I would start with chicks. Hatching eggs can be a big disappointment if you have never hatched before, waiting 21 days to find out something went wrong, where as chicks are instant pleasure and will bond with you quick enough. So much easier than hatching if you have never done a hatch before.

Stop by our learning center if you need any info on starting your new adventure. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping your new flock...

Good luck in what ever you choose and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X4 There are +/- to all three.
Eggs are nice in that you can often get uncommon breeds that you won't find in your area and can get a big mix of breeds, incubating is fun and it is neat to watch the eggs develop and hatch... but incubating is work and of course if you have a bad hatch, you may wind up with nothing, and you will hatch roosters...and you still have to deal with the work of chicks.
Chicks are good in that they are instant gratification, fun cute little things, you can get them fairly easily this time of year... but unless you get sex links there is the chance of a rooster, if you get them shipped you take the chance of having chicks doa, and they are fragile and some die no matter what you do, they are also a lot more work than getting pol pullets.
With pullets, you should not have accidental roosters, you should have eggs a lot sooner... they can be tamed down, but they don't tend to be as friendly as ones you raised yourself, you also have to be a little more careful so far as diseases go.

With incubating, you don't know how many roosters or hens will be in the bunch. plus if you order baby chicks, Most places have already gave them their shots and they will give you hens or roosters. what ever you ask for. no guessing like incubators.
