Decrow

Do the crow collars work on peacocks? Just wondering if that could be a solution.
I think a collar might cause harm to a peacock during breeding season as they have a swelling at the top of their neck that comes and goes, when you see this hump coming up in real time it looks rather uncomfortable, some of my peacocks put their beak to the ground as it swells and IMO putting a collar in this area could cause harm as it is not something they do on command but is a hormonal thing during breeding season.

So this is what im going to do, im going to build a pen, i studied other possibilities like a collar, cordectomy, and castration. Collar and cordectomy, only found vets that say that is unethical and couldn't find anyone willing to do it, so it is not an option, at least for me. Castration it's proven to be ineffective, i found an article of a veterinarian that did this on a peacock to see if it changed he's behaviour and it didn't work http://www.avianstudios.com/blog/bird-vasectomy-and-castration/ :(, so my only option: to build a closed pen, so nobody wakes up at night :). I only have one male, no peahens, so the noise should not still be a problem :D.

You really have me curious...I can tell you've clearly done your homework. How are you going to build the pen to be soundproof? Like using plexiglass or something? Have you sat down and talked to your neighbors? Maybe you could buy them a bottle of wine or a gift basket and try to warm them up.

I lived 4 or 5 houses down from a couple that bred peacocks on a back street in a little town when I was in college. Our lots were probably 1/2 acre squares. The peacocks called ALL hours, day or night. One would call then the other three would call. Resulting in an all night choir of screaming. It would have made the owners bankrupt supplying wine to all of the upset neighbors. I moved.

I wonder if it's actually legal for you to have a peacock where you are living. Have you checked your zoning? Are there ordinances against having roosters where you are, for example?
If there are ordinances about animal noise nuisance, then just a soundproof nighttime pen is unlikely to help you much...

That's funny because I live 4 houses down from someone who breeds them too. I don't even think our lots are that big. He's actually the one that gave me my pea eggs that are in the incubator now. The noise from his house doesn't bother me. It intrigued me to know what was screaming "help" when I moved in but to me, animal noise is different, sort of natural. Not everyone thinks that way though!
