Ok so I have a hatch going on Day 18 today. I added water this morning (filled the bottom trays) and closed it up to wait. I checked the hydrometer a few hours later and the humidity went up a LOT higher than I wanted. I try to keep the humidity around 55-60% but this spiked to 69% (and climbing). also it is VERY, VERY humid outside here today so I think that was effecting it. I was worried it would go up even more so I had to take action.

I panicked which i know i should do but just can't help myself sometimes. I knew i had to get some of the water in the tray out of there. I had this (possibly not so) brilliant idea to just suction some out, only i couldn't find anything small enough except a little drink straw. Somewhere in my mind this made sense, I swear....i sucked up some of the water and spit it out right out in the sink next to me. I took out probably about a 1/2 cup of water. The humidity is down in the lower 60's now and I'm keeping an eye on it so I'm not too worried about that anymore.... I have a whole NEW concern now.

My pharmaceutical chemist DH stopped home about an hour after I did this, I was retelling him the story thinking what a dedicated little surrogate hen mama I am and he looks at me as if I'm completely out of my mind. He says. "You could get really sick doing that! Why would you even think that's a good idea?" wow, did i feel stupid and now scared that I could have ingested something BAD!

The incubator was thoroughly cleaned prior to use, I DID NOT swallow any water and made sure to rinse with listerine as soon as I was done but now I'm totally freaked out!!!!

so I ask, am I dedicated, insane or just stupid? go ahead, tell me i'm stupid...i can take it.

anyone else ever do anything like this? what's the most dedicated/insane/stupid thing you've done for your chicks??!

I had to giggle when I read this! I would have done the same thing, then panic.

I didn't even notice you are also from Ohio!!! I live in Strongsville. I am hatching for a friend of my son's. I read your other post and let me know what you hatch I may get some from you for him.

I say you are dedicated, and probably in no danger whatsoever. He needs to relax, lol!

Relax. You're most likely in no danger whatsoever. I wouldn't make a habit of it, incubators are a fine place for germs to grow, but the wells were dry, so not much microbial activity likely, until you added water, and it wasn't there very long, and was probably chlorinated, anyway. In a day or two, there could be a lot of germs in it, but that soon, probably not.

Besides, in the unlikely event you do become ill, it'll most likely be mild and easily treated. Like maybe the runs, for one day.

I did the exact same thing with my first hatch set. I'm still kicking. DIdn't even get sick... you should be fine.

Dedication, Insanity or Stupidity?

Well, I wouldn't go so far as saying, "insanity!"
You sure made me laugh out loud, as I was picturing this!

I just had to read your post out loud to the nearest person. She thinks your somewhere in the middle. I think maybe not so brilliant, but definately dedicated.
