HI, I'm new here. I need some help with first aid. We have a three year old Cochin hen. She had a dirty bottom so we went to clean her and found open wounds with maggotts in them. Three open wounds. We have pretty much cleaned out the maggotts fom what we can see. We have isolated her in the house to keep away flies. We are rinsing the wounds with chlorhex once a day and giving her 1cc of Tylan 50 by shot. Last night we went to work on her and the wounds are looking scabby, is this good? Also it looks as though she has another abscess that has very light greenish fluid in it. Should we lance it or leave it. Any suggestions are helpful. I read we should pack it and wrap it but its all around her vent so it makes that close to impssible. Should we be putting neosporin on it? I dont have a pic of the greenish blister but here is a pic of the wounds from 2 days ago, and she smells kinda bad too.

Welcome to BYC. I would probably get some epsom salts at any pharmacy or WalMart, and soak her bottom each day, and wash off any infection. Betadine is another good thing to use. There is also a screw worm spray that you can spray on to get rid of any remaining maggots. Here are some threads to help you:

Sorry I haven't kept up to date. Chicken is now back with the general population and doing well. Five days of Clavamox and some in home care and she is back in business! We had another chicken (Polish hen) that had a prolaps and thus had a dirty bottom (we checked them all after we saw what happened to the first one) so we new exactly what to and she is doing fine without any antibiotics and will be released back to her girlfriends this weekend. So...to some it up flys love dirty bottoms (fly strike) and will create a very nasty wound in very little time. #1 Isolate your chicken--DO NOT use peroxide #2 cut away feathers and clean area then pick as many maggots out as you can with tweezers #3 squirt wounds with antibiotic cleaner (something with dilluted chlorhexadine) #4 Soak in a warm water with Epsom salt bath (maybe on day 2) #5 Tweeze out more maggots #6 Smear with neosporin (non-pain releif) #7 If you have it and you think they need it give antibiotics #8 Tweeze the maggots out everyday until they are gone and continue to squirt with antibiotic cleanser and smear with neosporin.. they will get better, keep them inside and away from the flys! Give them a boiled egg or some scramble egg ( I heard this helps).
