Deep litter in the run (not the coop)

Since this post started, we've bought a dump truck full of sawdust, and started putting it into the run. It works flawlessly. Also, behind out property, the neighbors trees have leafed, so a TON of leaves have fallen into our driveway and back of our house. The kiddo and I raked up about 6 cart fulls and dumped them in the run, and we bought a leaf blower/mulcher and have bagged up about 3 yard bags full of mulched leaves for later in the winter.

We are quite happy with our results. The run isn't slick and muddy after it rains any longer. We toss out treats that slip into the deep litter, so they have to turn the litter to get to them. We plan on having a nice lot of compost once spring has sprung!
i do this too...but i feel bad throwing their food into the "stuff" with their "pooh" in it...although they dont seem to mind...its always tossed around when i go back in the coop only a few hours later...silly chickens...but they are interesting to watch. Mine are:spoiled..:)

Believe it or not, chickens peck through their waste! Check out post #2 on THIS THREAD to read about it.

In my chicken run, the chickens eat up all the greenery. They'd benefit from some deep litter filled with bugs to forage.
I move my run with the start of every vegetable growing season. Then plant my garden in the vacated spot. My chickens kill all the grass in no time. I have a lawn tractor with grass catcher that I empty the grass clippings into the run all summer long. It is a symbiotic relationship where everyone seems to benefit.

Just for the record my grandfather let his chickens free range. On of the favourite places chickens like to forage was the horse and cow manure piles.
