we use deep litter for the horses all winter, remove the very wet spots and piles of poop, stir and then add a layer of shavings on top. we have a very well ventleated barn but properly done its not stinky at all and on extreamly cold days I have checked the temps and the stalls are 10+ degrees warmer then outside the barn. the only thing I know is that deep litter works better on earth then in a coop raised off the ground.

I've been doing the DLM since June. I have hay and soft wood shaving in the large coop and just the wood shaving in the smaller coop. If I had it to do over I might skip the hay in the one coop as I like the shavings better.
I haven't taken out any poop and don't use boards under the roosts. I do stir it up about once a week and every few weeks I add more shavings, DE and Lime.
One corner of the coop is getting some water in by the floor so we are going to mud it up this week and then I'll remove the litter in that area.

On that article I posted it does say to NOT take out all the dirty litter, that its healthier for the flock...and helps maintain a balance...

But Ive also only done parital removal when changing it out.
