Deep litter method

Bee, if you build that thing, think you could will it to me when you go? LOL! I'd love to have one just to take care of the willow leaves in my yard every winter. I refilled the coop 4 times just with willow leaves this fall!

Sure thing!

It looks like a neat project for spring construction. I'm going to modify my hoop coop, if the Lord is willing, so this will be one of the things I can do when I have the tools out.

I'm going to have to see what lumber scraps I can use around here to devise that thing because I think it would be a neat thing to have baled up leaves and grasses here...and also would love to see anyone's expression years from now when I'm long dead and gone.... they try to figure out what in the world that thing IS.

Hey, WBF!!! How's the rooster's comb?  Been dying to ask!  :frow

Hi Bee ! :frow

Mr. Rodney's comb is no worse for the wear... He even has a teenie, tiny bit of red on a tip or two. I slathered his comb in castor oil again the other day so we'll see what happens. I don't think it will be the same beautiful red comb he once had but I truly believe that the CO helped to prevent further damage.

I'll get some pics soon and post them up so you can take a look :)

How cool! We'll have to tuck that one into the arsenal and see if it works all the time or if it just had a miraculous recovery. I'd love to see pics!

Cluckinghen palace reminded me of this book I got for my little daughter for Christmas. It was called " Cinders, a chicken Cinderella". It is adorable. The story takes place in Russia and has beautiful pictures of Russian architecture for the palatial chicken coop. It's darling. The author is: Jan Brett.

So I am using the deep litter as well and added wood ash from my airtight to get the ammonia smell down it has worked well..."the urine is acidic and the ash alkali so they cancel each other out" It has been raining a lot here so I have been leaving heat on it to keep it dry...".A brew belt from beer making stays at around 100" move it around, works really well in the incubator as well. All in all the girls are very happy with the new approach. My wife makes Kefir and I make EM from time to time these micro-organisms help the birds to digest food better so they put on weight and eat less. The girls really love the kefir the EM I just put in their water. My wife makes the kefir for us to drink and sometimes rather than let the milk spoil she will add it to the batch and we have enough for the hens.
