deer hunting

The first year we lived here at 5:30am my DH was dressed for work sipping coffee on our screened in porch during deer season when he spots a huge buck and a doe grazing on acorns about 30 yards from our house. He opened the basement door a crack and shot him.

I never even heard the gun go off!

I can post pictures, but they may be considered graphic by some viewers, considering it's a dead deer

We have the head mounted on the wall

Dh diddnt, they are kind of hard to get here. We get to go once every two or three years. None of us got one last year.

My SIL, FIL and I got one this year, and FIL BIL and DH all got antelope tags, which is not very yummy but makes GREAT jerky.

I am SO excited, I love it! And we have some HUGE whitetails and muleys here, one of the few places in the country where you can hunt both in the same place, same tag, same season.

Last time we sent them to get processed, but they did a horrible job, and my FIL got a meat grinder last year, so I told them I would do it even if none of them wanted to help. I will take the $100 each and butcher them!!

We have 6 big wall hangers up right now and one still at the taxidermist. We don't trophy hunt but you wouldn't be able to tell that from my bedroom walls. My DH goes out for food and he has been blessed to shoot some nice rack bucks which we love to display

I wouldn't mind seeing your head!!

I couldn't ever especially after raising a fawn but my brother got one last year and the meat is still in our refrigerator because I am not eating it.

I'm trying to find the pics of the mounted head for you- the taxidermist did a really good job! All I can find right now are the pictures of the fresh kill

That's odd ... where I grew up, anyone with a license was entitled to take a buck, but doe tags were handed out by lottery, and the quantity was set each year based on deer population estimates in each county.

Doe permits were allowed to be shared by hunting parties as well, but usually only about 10% of the applicants got a doe permit.

We moved a couple months ago to a place out in the country on 3 acres. My DH has been feeding the deer not 60 feet from our back deck. Just an FYI - their absolute FAVORITE food (they like it much better than "deer corn") is good old chicken scratch (much cheaper too)! My DD19 bought DH a new crossbow for his b-day last month, so now he's all set and ready to go (of course, we know we have to stop feeding them at the end of next month, but they have a trail through our woods)

one day we forgot to get the new cover scent so we used the old scent in my fil shop. it was scented as corn and must have been three years old. i swear to you a squirrel sat next to me on the platform and chattered away!!! i accused dh hubby as sabotoge!! i finally knocked the noisy bogger off the platform and then he really did bark. of course i look scary in camo!!!

here i am freezing my tail off. didn't see a thing but i put too many of those hand warmers in my clothes which made me sweat so my butt actually froze to the platform. nothing like trying to be quiet and trying to unstick your butt from plywood. sounded like i velcroed my butt!!! atleast i can entertain myself....

All our deer tags are lottery, along with the antelope, bear, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and mountain lion tags.

Small game, waterfowl and elk are 'over the counter' tags. You can buy them in stores rather then apply for them.

I guess there are more hunters in Colorado then some places. I know the deer can be real pests back east, but here there aren't nearly as many. They have been very well managed.

I have read (dont know if its true...) that there are some places back east that have 50 deer per square mile or more!!
