deer hunting

Deer are a nuisance here...and they are SO well fed all year due to all the fields of corn that get left standing all winter that its rare to see a doe without twins. Landowners get a freebie tag so total DH and BIL bring in 7 each year. I of course wont be doing shotgun or muzzleloader so I only get one, which I am ok with!

Could you PM me some of your recipies? I use the ground meat just like hamburger. But I have trouble with the roasts, and especially the steaks. How do you make them stay tender and moist? They always end up dry for me.

Or maybe we could start a venison thread in the recipe section.

I don't hunt but my son's and father do bow hunt. Anyone need tips on gutting and skinning to insure good tasting venison, give me a holler! In this family, the females do most of the processing....

Its the only way we can see that it is done the way we prefer it done!

Soon as the youngin's fly the coop, I intend to appropriate their bow equipment and start practicing up.

BTW, the very best descenting for your camo is keeping your stuff in plastic bags with pine boughs/needles. Never take them inside or on your porch where woodsmoke can permeate the fabric. Same with the boots, gloves, etc.

On the subject of licenses, tags, limits, and so forth... I'm lucky enough to be in area where we're allowed one deer with visible antlers and unlimited anterless deer every year.. The regular hunting license allows for one of each, or two anterless, but then you can buy as many 'bonus tags' as you want, which are good for two antlerless deer each.

I don't even have to buy tags or licenses, though...I'm a landowner. Licenses and tags aren't required, so long as I hunt my own land.

The steaks may be a little smaller than what you'd find in the store, but by golly...100% organic, super lean, ultra fresh, and the price is perfect...FREE!

Hard to beat that..

That's odd ... where I grew up, anyone with a license was entitled to take a buck, but doe tags were handed out by lottery, and the quantity was set each year based on deer population estimates in each county.

Doe permits were allowed to be shared by hunting parties as well, but usually only about 10% of the applicants got a doe permit.

The Game and Fish Commission were backwards back then. They wanted the bucks killed and the doe to live to have young. Then they got over populated really fast. Now in Most states. Bucks are limited to 1 or 2 per season and they have to have a certain amount of points to be taken in some states. And we are allowed up to 4 doe. Some states like MO all you have to do is keep buying doe tags and there is no limit on how many you can take. It's helped a ton. There are still deer everywhere but the bucks are getting more mature and larger. Also keeping the doe thinned out helps with disease and starvation problems. If you ask a conservationist what to feed the doe in your yard. He'll tell you to feed them led. At my deer camp if you shoot a young buck. Called a button buck you have to eat something gross. Two years ago we had BBQ Meal Worms and Chocolate covered crickets. No one killed a button buck last year

That would be a great thread! I will fix you up some recipes and PM them to you. They are all pretty simple htough but yummy! I like to do my roasts in an oven bag. I recently started using them and I really like the way they hold all the moisture in. We make most of it into ground meat and cubed steak and sausage. The smaller deer I like to keep whole in the freezer for roasting and other special recipes like the deer roll ups. That is a good one. I think I posted that on a recipe thread too on here. I will send it to you too though.

Beekissed- Of course us women folk can do it better LOL

I'm not real sure exactly how many deer I have taken over the years, but it's got to be somewhere around 300. In spite of having hunted sucessfully for years I still get excited as the weather starts to cool and deer season approaches. Then each time a deer comes near my stand my heart starts to race. I have always said that when that no longer happens I will quit hunting.
