I just noticed why my little OE pullet is ALWAYS eating and ALWAYS seems to have food hanging out of her mouth. There is something WRONG with her beak. . .

It does not look like a scissor beak. The beaks are NOT misaligned left to right. . . .

The beak looks more like the top and bottom were not made to fit together. When the tips of the beaks are touching, you can see right thru her mouth because the top beak curves up.

She is 8 weeks old.

I was wondering if any one knew what this type of beak defect is called.

Also, wondering what I should feed her that would make it easier for her to eat.

I will try to get a picture of it, but I won't be able to do that until Thursday. I was hoping you guys / gals might be able to help me out before then

hmmm, just like people who have teeth too large for their mouths, extra wisdom teeth, etc, could this just be a genetic anomaly? If she can eat pretty normally, snip off grass, etc, then she should be able to live a pretty normal chicken life, no? Just wouldn't want to hatch fertile eggs from her, just in case the genes "pay it forward"...

Now tell me, have you ever seen a week-old chick with extra-large nostrils, so much they are almost one big continuous hole?? It seems to be eating fine, but my son noticed and thought it had a cracked beak, but upon closer inspection, looks like huge nostrils....???

I haven't heard of that one before. It doesn't sound like a major quality of life issue but as previously stated you may want to avoid breeding. Would a deeper than usual food dish allow her to get more food at a time? Maybe normal wear an tear vs. new growth will resolve the problem. I would love to see pics.

I have always thought my BO has unusually large nostrils. He sneezes a little more than he should and has always had a very nasal voice. As a chick, he sounded like he was quacking rather than peeping. His crow is funny too. I also noticed he breaths through his mouth more than the others when it is hot.

He has never had any health issues from it though.

I will work on getting some pics. She is cute as a button.

The beak issues is some sort a genetic mistake. She also seems to have a drawf gene too. Her momma had a chick from the last hatch that was small too! So, there will be no babies from this pullet with the beak issue OR from her momma ( due to the mutant drawf gene).

The momma is my favorite EE. . . . Being an EE. who knows whats in that genetic package

. The chick is going to be way smaller than her momma. . . She seems to be able to get enough to eat because she sure is getting WIDER. . . . I have been taking a bowl of a wet / mush chick starter mix to her daily. I have seen her at the bowl a few times, but the young cockerels seem to like the mix a LOT more than her
