There's nothing in its throat. I think it might pull through. I was just worried about it suffering. It seems to be fighting, so I'll give it a chance. Thanks to all for the concern. The reason I'm so worried is that this is the only one of the hatch that looks like my best rooster that died last week.

Could it have eaten shavings? What are you using for bedding?

I know this is not the same type issue, but last year I hatched out a baby that appeared to be hydro cephalic and have palsy of some sort (so obvious neurological damage, right....). She just lay there twitching for 2 days with me debating putting her down. She is....ummm...well, laying age now (sorry can't remember exactly how old) and a perfectly healthy, sweet little beauty. You would never guess how she started out. Good luck with your little one.

Thanks for the encouraging story. It gives me hope. I am letting nature take its course now. I am using pine bark pellets for bedding. They crumble into dust when they get wet, so that wouldn't be it. I think the swelling is going down now anyway.

dont know about the swollen one but the one with the bad leg can be fixed by putting a hobble out of bandaids on it.

what kind of incubator did you use. was it a still air? I can see the deformity in the leg. it looks really bad. I can't believe the chick hatched. Anyways My guess is the deformity is caused by temp. fluckuations. either too hot or too cold and not staying consistant. You may not have been aware of it. But it happens with the still air foam incubators.

It's not a still air. I watched the temp very closely, but with the fluctuations in temps last week it did get away a few times.

I just saw your post! I hate when these things happen!! The one with the swollen neck ( you said it was getting better) if it is eating and drinking hopefully he will be ok! The other one, try hobbling its legs like the other person suggested. If its foot if curled then use bandaids or make a boot and tape the foot flat and it should grow straight. I had one in my last hatch that could not even stand up and I put a boot on, well now you can't even tell she was deformed!
For me the hobbles are hard to do, I can never get them quite right. But this said, I am not very graceful either!! I hope they get better soon!!

Oh dear, I feel your pain.
I hve a deformed chicken named adorable. She hs BIG feet, the back toes are to high up to touch the gound, her legs are so closed together she steps on her feet when she runs. Now for the good part her bottom beak is at a 45 degree angel from the top beak so her mouth is never closed. Her toung is dry from being out in the air all the time. Now SHE has started crowing. ??? Adorable is a house pet as the other checkens would kill her. She is sweet and loveing and seems to be fine with her fate. She is 7 months old.


Just lots of love. If she is spirited away to that free range in the sky........ well thats a part of life.
