Delaware Pullet or Roo?

So does anyone in the Abilene, TX area want a Delaware roo?

I hate to see him go, but he along with any other roo's I discover must go. I believe his hatchery of origin is the "Privett Hatchery" in Portales, NM.

If you don't get any takers on your baby delaware roo, you might want to post him under the auction section. I betcha he will get snapped up in a heartbeat. If I wasn't so many states away from you, I know I would !

Can Speckled Hen elaborate on the differences on coloring with the sexes for Delawares? At what age can you start judging them by the color of the feathering?

Delawares change an amazing amount as they develop. What you see in those pics, the smut down his back, will eventually disappear, his hackle barring and tail barring will develop and become more defined. In the pullets, they may have some smut, but they won't have as much barring (which on narrow hackles, looks more like stippling) in the hackles and though they may have some barred tailfeathers as juveniles, those should eventually molt out and they will have tail black, black feathers edged in white, while the males will have barring. Delawares are a breed that you can't really judge till they are close to breeding age.

All the markings that go from the hackles and cascade down the shoulders and the middle of the back are usually a sign of a male, but on Dels, the combs usually develop very quickly (by 4-5 weeks, they will be pink and getting larger) and pullets won't get a comb like that little boy has till close to the point of lay.
