Delawares from kathyinmo

Tom, weren't you on day 22 yesterday? Hoping you had good hatch results!
I don't know anymore since confusion on lockdown LOL- According to my notes we set on evening of 3/22 Hmm! I think Saturday will be 21.
I loose track when I run out of fingers and toes LOL

Whatever hatches I will consider a miracle with all the problems we have had - but its a learning experience so all's good.

I can't even remember exactly what day it was that I gave the eggs to my broody. I'll just wait until I hear peeping ... Should be early next week!

Pip,Pip pip started last night at five - I have incubator separated in two sections with a 2.5" barrier in between. This morning we have 4 new chicks with 3 empty shell on one odd hatch side and one empty on the F5 side.
Only problem is all chicks are on the F5 side- they mighty health to climb over that barrier LOL.
So I don't know who's who to toe punch LOL
Count current is 1 F5/F5 , 1 F5/HN ,2 F5/EE
Don't see any more of remaining 16 pipping but wasn't suppose to happen till today so fingers still crossed

Yay!!! Up early to go beekeeping (5:30 AM here), one of our five jobs :) Fingers crossed for you!

Day 22, 7 of 13 hatched, leaving the others in the hatcher for now. 3 are pipped and still alive but I don't think they will make it out, 1 pipped and died, the last 2 no pip yet. Just put the 7 newly hatched Dels as well as 8 Marans under a New Hampshire broody. She has only been broody for a week but took to them all immediately. She has been in a bad spot under some hay bales in an open fronted barn but I built a fortress around her and once she wants to bring them out will put them all in their own pen. Always prepared to take the chicks back if things don't work out but so far I have been having good luck this year with first time broodies.

Interested to see if development will be quicker being raised by a broody. My ones in the brooder are getting farther behind my Marans and New Hampshires hatched at the same time.

Are you seeing more eggs hatch from individual hens and others, not? That's what I'm seeing. It makes the overall hatch look not so good, when actually some hens have excellent hatches and overs have worse.
Wish that I had some broody hens. I've had fake eggs in nests, but they aren't falling for it.
Also waiting to hear from Tom. BTW, you can put the hatching eggs in clear plastic fruit baskets to keep them separated.

Definitely. I am only using 4 hens and I have not gotten an egg to hatch from the nicest one yet. Got some help/ideas on the showbirdbid forum but mostly just varying opinions. Something I had not thought of was putting her eggs under a broody. Normally I have better hatch rates in my incubator so I just give the few hens I have go broody chicks but next broody is going to get her eggs and we will see. All my breeder hens are back on free-range again but one of the Del. Cocks is with the flock so he should keep the eggs fertile. Wondering if hatchability may be more of a problem in our matings that are brother/sister as we don't really know the relationships of these birds? Just thinking aloud here.

I've been wondering about sibling breeding, too. I haven't done any reading on breeding yet ... at this point it is irrelevant as I only have the trio for planned breeding. All I know is that these three are the same generation of this project, so figured they are siblings ...

Update

F5s - 10 set at lockdown - 9 hatched / [ all #1 cock Bert] all in the Foam a bator
NH ,Redline and EE[w/F4 #2 Cock Ernie ] 10 set at lockdown - 7 hatched - Kenmorebator

Research Rotational breeding and Line breeding. Google/book has some good old free books on breeding.
