Delawares from kathyinmo

Still no chick sounds or pipping or zipping in the broody box (that I could see when I took a super quick look!) ... but I also forgot to write down the day I gave the hen the eggs, so I'm not losing hope yet.

Latest hatch in progress, day 21 this evening. Three of my nicest hens eggs have hatched, YAY!!!!!!!
That is great! I wonder what made the difference? I'm sorry about your skunk/broody accident.

Kim - be glad to loan you Foam-a-bator - It has a 90% hatch rate in spite of its problems

Leslie.........Any chicks???

Speaking of something different this year, no Cocci. In all the years past I have had to treat at least one batch of chicks. Last year, every single batch including Kathy's chicks. Same wooden brooders in a horse stall, exact same management/feed (do not feed medicated feed). We had some unusually cold weather this winter, wondering if the cold killed it?? Maybe my flock is developing resistance after all these years??? Whatever, I'll take it :)

No. Nothing. I'm so sad for my broody. But I've got some 1/2 incubated eggs under another broody I might set under her on Sunday when I start another batch (I've got another fresh broody to start).

Okay, I admit, I'm sad for me, too. :(

I'd had fertilized eggs from those two hens for forever ... checked every egg for weeks ... so I'm not sure what went wrong except this was the first time I hoarded eggs for a clutch instead of selecting from the whole flock all in one day ...

I'm not even sure I want to look inside the eggs ...

No cocci ! - it may be a combination factor but lets hope its a immunity . I do medicated chick starter but only for about four weeks and then regular and fermented [soaked] whole grains - and with pelletized as soon as they can get them down.

Sorry no results but I would check the eggs at least you will know at what stage you lost them.

If anybody knows anybody close to southern VA thats looking[ for a egg flock I have my original flock to re-home FREE pick up
5 delaware , 3 NH and 2 EE - all under two year old [ most 1] all laying

I will also have some first hatch test run F5 Delawares

I decided I had enough Delaware chicks out, so yesterday I turned the two pullets out from the cockerel pen into a mixed breed laying flock. Man those pullets are aggressive. Usually the newcomers get beaten on. Not these--they just turned and stood their ground. I hope they aren't going to be TOO aggressive! I don't want any feather plucking, and I saw a feather in each of their beaks.

They just got to re establish the pecking order LOL
And yes they can get aggressive . I thru a broody acting one off the nest one day and when the Cock saw her it was immediate reaction and he started
the love attack - she wasn't in mood for that and we had a fight . Didn't last long but I think he decided it wasn't worth a injury and backed off.
She just shook un-ruffling her feathers and ran back and jumped in a nest " Come on big boy come get me now " They are funny LOL

I just put 26 eggs collected this week in the bator and thats it for me unless someone wants some on a pickup basis.

You all know I had a failed clutch under a broody. It was due to hatch early last week ... I said I was going to clear it out of the nest today.

Long story short, when I was moving the disappointed broody's tray out of her broody cage I heard peeping! I took a quick look and she has one tiny chick. Tiny! It must have hatched today. I cannot believe one hatched after all that time. I have some theories about why ...

I set the tray down on the floor of the Delawares' cage with everything in place ... chick, broody and the other eggs. Now it is up to the broody to take care of the wee chick and figure out when she wants to move off the eggs. I won't leave the other eggs too long. I hope the Dels leave broody and chick alone. She is a sweet broody, so I don't know how fierce she will be. It is a very roomy coop for the 5 of them.

The chick seems to be all yellow. I just don't see well right now, and I didn't want to bother them too much, so that's all I know.
