Delawares from kathyinmo

Yeah ... I really love little yellow fluffy chicks. These all have really bright orange legs. At least some are starting to show that gray on their wings ... And those very serious foreheads.
The chicks that I received from Kathy last year were my first look at what a wide skull and rear width should look like. Yes, seriously cute!
Mine start out with orange legs, then some fade when they feather out. Last year, the legs on most brightened up again.

REAL PLEASANT SURPRISE

10 so far out of 26 eggs set - the reason its a good surprise is because when the hatcher put them in lockdown he realized the egg turner was never plugged in.
So these eggs never moved during the entire incubation- the turner was holding the eggs at a constant approx 50 degree angle. They were not even handled to candle- SURPRISE . And a couple more look like they are pippin .
Well, that's good news! And a sure sign of vigor for the ones that hatch. Aren't unturned eggs prone to produce chicks that can't pip?

Nice baskets. Is that your custom incubator? Do the chicks hop out of those baskets?

What a relief that they are hatching!!! That's awesome!

You can use their little behinds as powder puffs. They just kill me ... kinda like fresh Cornish X do (sorry, but I think Cornish X are about the cutest chicks ever

), so I'm pleased these Dels are similar looking chicks.

Yes my Kathy stock are now all yellow white legs - even ones that were green

We at 13 now - so thats 50% without turning LOL

Baskets are Wally world special - 2 for $2.99 - they have 5" sides, we can get two on a shelf and are on 2nd floor shelf of incubator- when chicks dry good I move them
to a mesh wire basket on third floor shelf which has 6" sides No one has jumped the fence yet and thats why I got them because my first hatch was mixed and we had a fence jumper before I marked them . [ that was in the foam-a-bator ]

Yes that is the custom Kenmore-bator- at first we had a problem keeping humidity up but put a hand size towel in pan of water with a large sponge and clip the towel corners to the bottom of the second shelf. With a fan in bottom blowing on the towel it put sufficient humidity in the air.

Not Turning does not do that. It lowers the hatch rate--in this case the worst part was the angel. Embryos will die around day 10 if they are not turned and at a bad angle.

Before sometime in the 1950s, most incubators did not turn eggs.

Cool info - Thanks Ron
We at 14 hatched of 23 and have one I can just about count pipping - so if it makes it I will be real pleased at 65%- considering the circumstances.
Although I had 90% in my first hatch in Foam a bator and the 2nd was about 61%. But that one started in the Foamy and was transferred mid stream.

What is the preferred NON turning angle before all this fancy equipment ?

Big end straight up, if the turner is not working works the best. On the side and not turning is bad because the embryo goes to one side and the veins do not form correctly. That leads to early death at 10 days because the veins do not move the nutrients correctly. Not all of them die though.

It is best to turn and it will be a stress on the chicks if they are not turned. Healthy genetics like the these Dels have can handle that better.

The confusion with mal positioned chicks that do not make it at the end of hatch is that the chick is not in position to pip and zip until late in the hatching process. If the chick dies before tuning, it will be in the wrong position. It is not usually the position of the chick that causes the problem rather when the chick dies. Day 16 to 21 day old chicks die for a lot of reasons from flock health-disease to temperatures too low or too high. Ventilation is a very common cause at that point. Lack of egg turning either automatically or manually is not that much of a factor at the end.

If the turner had been working, you would have likely had a higher hatch rate. Who knows how high. Probably in the 80% range but you still had a good hatch! It is important to not give up when things go wrong when incubating.

That's great! Any more hatched?

The one I said was pipping died with the shell popped open - most likely when I opened door the humidity dropped. My Bad ! It was out but captured by the
covering drying out. One other did the same thing and died after popped out.
But the good news is 4 more hatched last night making it 18 or 69%- I think thats it but we giving it till this evening.
All in all I'm happy considering the hatch masters blunders LOL

Edited for math error
