Delawares from kathyinmo

Thanks! I'm hoping other people have some good photos to contribute to the "essay." Leg color, combs, proper barring in hackles, width between legs ... there are lots more details to consider.

Currently we are under Polar Blast here in the south- My old joints just hold out long enough to feed . Pictures require bare finger and ain't going to happen soon LOL
But will keep it in mind.

I was just washing some lettuce in VERY cold tap water. My hand started to hurt so bad I had to hop around the kitchen screaming obscenities. Gust ran and got Dad to rescue me. Is this what arthritis feels like? It sucks!

I have fancy touch-screen gloves for using the iPhone outside. They only help a little cuz they don't block the wind. Warmish in these parts at the moment. Lucky us.

I think it sounds like raynaughs syndrome. Thats not spelled right. Humm. But its a painful condition of the hands when they get cold. The circulation I think cuts off due to spasms. Look it up. Good luck with this. You will have to be extra careful of cold.

That makes sense! I have a couple "syndromes" associated with my tissue strength and circulation! I can't regulate my body temperature, so have to be careful with that. Hadn't had a spasm like that in my hand, though. Wowzers! I was howling. Poor Gust was so worried.

Raynaud's phenomenon is usually the tips of extremities - toes / finger - In cold weather they get red and very sore to touch- My toes have it

That story reminds me: Every time I try to get a male EE chick to run with the free rangers here he turns into the jerkiest of jerks at adolescence and has to go. Even the ones we hatch here. It's weird because the female EEs are either timid or loners, so don't cause any trouble. I'm going to have to fill my More Blue Eggs, Please needs some other way.

I'm wondering if I might add a Delaware cockerel to the Freedom Rangers. I have 4 LF cocks in there, plus Tonka (3/4 sized but with attitude so he sleeps outside) and Ruffles (bantam cochin), but over 100 females so there might be room for one more when I move over the 20 or so Delaware pullets. The Delaware cockerels are pretty good foragers (better than the pullets), and love to run around and play and climb things. Maybe that big puffy gray one with the super fancy tail -- he is so beautiful but probably not right for breeding. I'm a tad too nervous to let the potential breeders run wild.

It always makes me nervous to introduce a new roo.

Hi. I have 6 hatchery chicks. 2 EE's. One is a rooster. He's crowing and breeding. He's a very nice fellow so far. He comes around, doesn't act threatening, looks after the girls and leaves my little dogs alone. He also doesn't crow incessantly. Basically in the a.m. around dawn, and in the afternoon when it's time to head to the coop/pen. I'm pretty happy with him. I'm thinking he's a keeper, but what color eggs will he make with my Delaware, Black Australorps, GLW, and other EE?

He should have one blue egg shell gene. It is dominant so if that gene is inherited by the chick, the egg shell will be blue. He may have a white egg shell gene too and if that is inherited instead, the egg shell will be white with chicks from the Delaware and Austaralorp. The egg shell can still be blue if the EE Hen provides a blue gene though. The EE Hen might also have a white and blue egg shell gene though.

The Delaware and Australorp will have brown genes for the outer coating of the shell so most of those eggs will be a light green. The EE hen may have some brown coating genes too so it is hard to say what tint of egg she will have. Note: Green eggs come from a blue egg shell coated with brown. Egg shells are only white or blue)

You can get a lot more information by going to one of the EE threads.

Ron thats very interesting - I have a EE that lays Green and one that lays blue - If I cross that with one of the Delaware cocks the chicks eggs could be any color depending- am I reading that right

Yes, the eggs will be a light to darker green. There can also be white to blue.
