Delawares from kathyinmo

Beautifull but cold day here. Lots of fun bucketing 3000 LBS of dried corn into barrels for storage and taking a pic. of the clean-up crew and a few pics. of the 6 F'5 Cockerals I am watching grow out. Still not sure if I will use any of them this season. Two seem to have a wing issue, (thought I had culled them all already) on one side so they are on the list for next butcher day.

Dad wants to adopt you.

Have you noticed that one black/gray Roo is bigger than your turkeys? What a face!

I love how the silver barring on the Delawares shines in that light. I think they look like they have some nice bellies and heads. Great combs. They change so much with age ... get better and better.

Bucketing keeps ya warm on cold days .
Cockerels have nice yellow legs and your combs overall seem better than mine -1 pic does not do justice but kinda like the last one down but its a bad pose.

Your Dad is a sweetie!

The Ameraucana Roo is actually quite a bit smaller but he is the head honcho! There are 11 Cockerals, the turkey trio and him at the farm away from home. He rules the roost and keeps the peace. Last Spring I had him home for breeding. He was in a pen which door opened from inside one of the Delaware pens (Cockeral was over twice his size). I did not latch the door properly after evening chores. When I went back down in the morning he was in the Delawares pen, on the roost, Cock a Doodle Dooing his heart out. The Delaware was not badly hurt but hovering in the corner of Ameraucana's pen covered with blood. He is something else!!!

Checked all wings this evening and all ok.

The last cockeral seems to be lacking meat........ He looks good till you get your hands on him. Tried to do some weighing tonight and forgot my digital scale. The grain scale bounces around too much when the birds move. Will try again with the better scale in a few days.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, but in the chicken world don't replace the scales and hands LOL

It's easier to weigh them after processing.

I could tell he was special.

That story reminds me: Every time I try to get a male EE chick to run with the free rangers here he turns into the jerkiest of jerks at adolescence and has to go. Even the ones we hatch here. It's weird because the female EEs are either timid or loners, so don't cause any trouble. I'm going to have to fill my More Blue Eggs, Please needs some other way.

I'm wondering if I might add a Delaware cockerel to the Freedom Rangers. I have 4 LF cocks in there, plus Tonka (3/4 sized but with attitude so he sleeps outside) and Ruffles (bantam cochin), but over 100 females so there might be room for one more when I move over the 20 or so Delaware pullets. The Delaware cockerels are pretty good foragers (better than the pullets), and love to run around and play and climb things. Maybe that big puffy gray one with the super fancy tail -- he is so beautiful but probably not right for breeding. I'm a tad too nervous to let the potential breeders run wild.

It always makes me nervous to introduce a new roo.
