Delawares from kathyinmo

I just read something about shipped eggs from a facebook group of breeders of Buckeyes. The post stated that shipping process has changed enough that hatch rates from any shipped eggs now are about 0%, so people are stopping shipping ...

I'm ordering from Just Fowling Around. They ship a lot of eggs. Hopefully they will do a great job of packing. Now, if the post offices treat the fragile box like a football, that is another story. The PO is really getting bad with handling items. And they wonder why people don't want to mail stuff any longer.

That's the gist of what the experienced egg mailers of show-quality birds were saying.

From my experience, the post office is shipping eggs the same way and it has not changed in several years.

Like I posted before, most of them are not packing well.

Why would someone think shipping eggs in a single box of saw dust was a good way to ship eggs? That is one example of a show quality egg shipper.

Back on topic of this particular thread: are you shipping eggs this year from this line of Delawares? People have been asking around for them. Should I funnel enquiries your way?

I have volunteered to ship for @capayvalleychick --When she is ready to ship of course!

Awesome! She's got nice ones. One more reason to hurry up and get another breeding male down to her!

Some of my pullet eggs are finally up to a size I'd consider hatching if I had a pair of broody hens from the laying flock volunteer to sit on them. Spring has come on hard and fast up here so I'm hoping to have broodies soon.

Photos of babies hatched from the eggs I picked up from Finnfur just a short 3 weeks ago. I apologize for the shitty (literally

) background in a couple of shots.

I included one of the unusually marked chicks. The legs look the same color to me as the pure yellows, but I don't know. The hatchery also said I had 15 out of 18 hatch, but I came home with 17 chicks. Somewhere someone is scratching their head.

Congrats !
Thats a good ratio and since you got more than hatched maybe a few jumped the fence- illegal avians.
I don't remember any with brown strips on them ??
Enjoy - they all look healthy

Okay. I dug through my records, and since I didn't do the hatching myself, I wasn't all that careful. I had 18 eggs total from Finnfur, and 5 of my own eggs in this hatch. On day 7, 3 eggs were clear so I brought them home and I ate them. 3 more eggs failed to pip/hatch. I have 17 chicks in the Rubbermaid tub. Math is good.

I think the little pale striped chicks are either what came from my EE rooster over my Delaware pullet, or the EE over the Black Australorp pullets. However, I have 2 EE chicks that are positively hairy looking! I mean, seriously loads of long fluff. Very interesting. One of the yellow/buff with the stripes has yellow legs, so I'm assuming Delaware.

Still not sure how the passing of color works. I'll keep an eye on feathering, and the combs and see if I can make an early determination. I'm also looking at the sharpness of the chipmunk markings. The sharp outlines in Welsummers and Dorkings indicate pullets.

Monday sees a hatch of Dorkings and EE/OE's from my own small group. Last check. they were all still alive. The 13 I have here at home that are due in 2 weeks have 2 eggs that are showing no movement, but they were okay 3 days ago. Poor baby chicks. They were the Dorkings, too. Oh well.

The current batch of Bonham Dels is lively, chatty and very cute. I'm pleased!
