Delawares from kathyinmo

LOL I know the feeling.

He's looking at you, Kim.

He spends all day running up and down the fence line of the Cockerel Colony flirting with the free-range females on the other side, and crowing. By the time he gets to you he'll have super strong legs and lungs.

Yeah the other rooster, I think.  Spring is here and there has been some infighting. I just gave away a rooster for that reason. Young roosters can be very fiesty.

True. I call spring (start of mating season) and fall (when young males start to find their voices) Cockerelpalooza. I learned to segregate the younger males before the seasons change or the whole flock suffers.

Cockerelpalooza - thats funny ! - They remind me of a bunch of teenagers that just hit puberty -definitely a show to watch

Well, I have to confess...... I just have not been able to cull the broody raised cockeral that looked like he had the funky wing issue on the right side. These are lousy pics. as I can't get very close to him and the camera batteries were giving out so I had to keep turning off and turning on the camera and missing many more good shots than these! The wing issue has resolved and I am very hopefull that he can help with some of the colour issues in the pullets between Leslie's birds and mine. He is the most correctly coloured I have seen of all our cockerals. Still has some growing to do but I am excited about him! Just need to pluck those two funky sickle feathers.........

Here he was a while back:

And Now:

Compare to the colour of the other cockeral I kept who is due to go into the breeding pen when PapaDel goes back home:

I can still see how silvery white he is! Nice!!!!! And he looks WIDE. Tail is decently spread. Head and neck look promising. Chest looks like it has filled in well. His top line looks similar to, but better than, the one Twin I've promised to take to the Youth Poultry outreach fundraiser event.

I could pluck long sickle feathers from my birds and make some kind of scary beast out of them. I have some seriously FANCY tails strutting around my property.

different pics show it different but I think the sickles are compounded because the other tail feather don't seem to come high enough to meet it. May be some of both. Does have nice color.
How did the wing change ?

He sure looks like he got better fleshing -unless that's fluff/feathers. His wing angle looks much improved. I don't remember seeing that happen before. At any rate, he looks much better. He looks to have better width in the rear than the other male. So hard to tell from photos, though.

The bottom three wing feathers on the right side looked separated when he was younger. Now they all fold up tight. Still holds them a little lower than I would like but I think he may be something to work with if I need him. Hoping the tail will improve as well as the shorter feathers grow more and maybe catch up, time will tell.

He has definitely filled in more, he was such a little beach ball chick I had great hopes! I'll take more pics. in a month or two and we'll see where he is at.

Yup :) Can't get close and when I zoom in they come out blurry. It's only one of the first digital cameras to ever come out, maybe I should do something about that......... :)

I had occasion to communicate with Walt Leonard yesterday, so I sent him a photo I just took of Mr. Fatty. Walt said Mr. Fatty is a good choice for a breeder. To which I can only reply "Phew!" as I've already got eggs he's fertilized under a broody.

Mr. Fatty from yesterday, looking slightly less like a beach ball than he sometimes does ...

And Mr. Fatty from yesterday looking just like a steam roller ...
