Delawares from kathyinmo

My 3 Delaware pullets are all laying the same number of eggs consistently. I get an egg every 1.6 days on average. No complaints there. Fertility has been excellent and so has hatchability. So far, I have 5 chicks on the ground from one pullet, 7 from the other. The third pullet is mated to a Rhode Island Red for red sexlinks.

Great!! Any with grey rumps?

Adult or chick? Pullet/Cockeral, both? I can take some tomorrow.

Birds in their adult plumage.

But . . . do not go into any trouble on my account.

For whatever reason I am drawn to black tailed varieties. The Catalana, the New Hampshire, the Delaware, etc. Balancing the qty of black seams to be the most challenging part of these varieties. If they have not already been refined.

I know there is the build the barn before you paint it, but this is something to be careful with in the mean time. It is not hard to get in a hole on this point. There is a definite correlation between wing color, under color, and surface color concerning whether or not the black is where it should be or not. In the colored varieties (at least in the buff), there is also a connection to the depth of surface color in un refined birds.

I am just thinking out loud and trying to get a better feel for this point. I understand it in theory, but confidently putting into practice is still something I am trying to get a grip on.

I suspect that as I try to clean up the Catalanas, I will have to keep a reserve of color or two, along the way.

The babies are coming early for me. Three Kathy dells are hatching so far. I think one other may be dead. I will not disturb the broody any more than I can help. I can not post pict. here.

Anybody have a shot of the wings opened?

That is something best done with 2 people. I tried it alone, so photos not the best. I don't think any of these are what would be considered correct, since they weren't selected for color, yet. Birds will be a year old April 29.
