Delawares from kathyinmo

Came home from the Northern New York Poultry Fancirs Association show yesterday with a Reserve Champion American class win on a Delaware Pullet. She attracted a lot of attention & the Judge said she was the best one he'd seen in years. She came from Kathy earlier this year.

Congrats!! When did she hatch? Mine hatched early April and still look pretty immature........ Do you know her current weight?

I want to use fish meal to mix into the feed, but the fish meal sold at the feed stores here has ethoxyquin in it as a preservative which is not good. Fertrell sells a fish meal that uses Naturox, which is mostly Vitamin E, as a preservative but the closest Fertrell dealer to me is in Colorado. Fertrell said they could ship it to me, but they are in PA and the shipping quote was $56.75 per 50-lb bag, and the product itself is $81.70. That's $138.45 for one bag! Yikes, it wish I could find it closer.

Try www.concentratesnw.com they are in Milwaukie, Oregon. Still $80 for a 50LB bag (organic) but shipping may be less. Also, a little goes a really long way, it is 60% protein.
I used to order the same fish meal from Fertrell, when it was $50. a bag They shipped it from the closest distributor, which was in WA. Shipping to Nor Cal was about $50. Now that the price has gone up, I can't justify (or afford) spending that much.

Congradulations - Its about time the Delaware gets some attention. Now we need to get a Cockerel in the win circle .
And we need PICs

Blue line #64 - unless something changes he will be our # one Cock- He was also heaviest 5.5 # at 19 week weigh in - now wish I had a Hen worthy but on the brighter side they are developing but slowly- The Cockerels are just starting to crow and mock fight. Very slow comparatively .

This is #60 [middle ] and the next best thing unless another makes a fast improvement- he was 5 pounds at 19 weeks.- he has taller stature than 64
but 64 is more like the brick shape.
Comments welcome

I like #64. Nice size on him. He's got the bowl shape. Brick shape is what you want in a RIR.

The only thing that bothers me with him is the angle where the tail meets his back, it should be a smooth curve. He's definitely the best of the two. I like the width between the legs on #60. Of course, I'm no expert so take my comments with that in mind.

Your weights sound similar to mine at that age. Your #64 looks heavier than 5.5.
I just realized the other day that mine were not crowing yet. No fighting between them, either, not even posturing. I have been appreciating their mellow dispositions. The males, all but one, do not like handling, though.

For 2 bags of that you could get a huge electronet fence with the built in push in stakes and let them forage for their own bugs and worms for the next several years...with the one time investment.
:-) This is true. And if you have the space, and year round access to said space (no 4ft snow drifts) .... I don't have the snow drifts, but it would be nice to have a protein back-up in case the mealworms/BSF/duckweed stuff isn't productive enough this winter. And my bird-load for the space is awfully high. Also, during breeding season where the breeding stock is separated and only gets to range once a week 'cause I want to know who is fathering what and which lady is laying what egg, I anticipate that ranging will not quite supply all the needs. Just pointing out reasons one might consider the fish meal.

:-) And the rest of the time, I'm with you.
