Delawares from kathyinmo

Getting the color right may well need to be done through double mating. One mating for females and one for males. As Blosi said...it can be done with small numbers but it will take a lot longer. These Kathy birds are all related, but you should not have to worry about that especially if you folks trade birds at some point. You all seem to be going about this in a very thoughtful way.

Do you mean wings too high? I had some like that and some ended up normal.
Or, do you mean split/slipped wing? Again, some have corrected with age, some may not. Count feathers, even the ones just coming in. My best male has what may be split wing. My best pullet last year had slipped wing... she was culled.
seems to me its the primary feathers that sit low, droop or twist - #1 Cock doesn't have it but he's passing a lot of it on - I will try to get some picks- worth a thousand two finger types

Words from a professional that confirms a novice's thoughts - LOL
OK Tom ,squeeze your head back in your hat.
Thanks for all your help Walt

Thoughts from a novice ;
Blosi says it can be done with small numbers- I believe it

NYReds found out how to do it - believe he has a head start

If you have different breeders running the same line [ like ya'll there out west] I would think after 4 or five generations or sooner you could do some swapping.
Kinda like fifth cousins marrying. This is why I found a close partner to run this line - we can both work on it then swap and still keep the line pure

All of these originated from the few Kathy started with - so they are all related

I talked to a Del breeder of another line that has won some shows [ don't know what size ] - she said that to get color/markings correct it was determined by her that she had to run one line for Hens and one line for Cocks

Wing-A-Ding thing
Every cockerel from Bert #1 s off spring has the wing feather problem[ except the smallest one] - Going to put the 2nd string in for the spring hatch and see what happens.
Micheal Newman and Barred Rocker have some by # 2 but don't know if having same problem yet.

I haven't posted any of my birds yet. I have hens from my own line and a couple from Paul Hardter. Will be hatching lots come spring lord willing. I'm not sure how to run two lines here. At least not without building more coops. I've got the land just not the energy.

Plus when this is all over with DW we'd like to go south. That won't be til after December. Lord willing.

I just wanted to post and mark my spot.

Some times deciding is hard

Go south ? Come on down ya'll - my neighbor is from NY - bought a small farm too. Lots of folks down here from NJ North to NY .
Most retired but some moved before.
land in the farm country in mid and western lower VA is very reasonable IMHO

I had looked in AL one time. DS and his were stationed there and I do like it. Course you know what they say, "no matter where you go there you are."

Too I have kids here. DW would not leave them and neither would I. Our church is here and friends of nearly 40 years.

Neither of my Southern kids have room for chickens.

I do have a cockerel with funky wings. This is his worse side. The other side isn't much better. He also carries his shoulders uneven. Poor guy.

Now I wait and see if any of the younger cockerels develop like this.

Thats why my neighbor moved here
Children grown and some in FL,WI , NY and NC
So they say they placed them selves in the middle were its not to hot and not to cold

Yep thats it - its the "REX" syndrome - name tag of one of the F4s - I took some F5 pics but need to upload them - will post later

F5 19wk pullet [ has a little of the REX wing ] all these pullets are by F4 Bert #1 and he doesn't have the wing problem

F5 pullet 19 wks

F5 pullet 19 wks

F5 Cockerel 19 wks - has REX syndrome - all these cockerels are from #1 Bert

F5 Ckr's 19 weeks - all have some wing feather problem except the smallest which has good shape/markings but not a desired size

Left is F5 ckr 19 weeks that has good wing / marks but lacks some size -Right is Ernie the 2nd string quarterback F4- Ernie has great shape but marking could be better and has slight wing problem. He has finally lost the big black sickle feather in
the tail. I am holding to see what develops after a molt.
Ernie has some yellowing of back feathers and hackles but when I had him cooped out of sun he whitened up a lot - been out for several months and yellow is back.
There is no off color to the under feathers ??
All my hens including the two EEs are way down on egg count here - think molt is happening

The wing back problem seems to be some skeletal problem that is hereditary. You have to eliminate that. The yellow on the feathers is from the sun, but it is also a predisposition to get yellow. You should only see that in males.
