Are we all pretty certain that they do not grow/molt out of the "Rex Syndrome" (the funky wings)? Just took a good look at my cockerals tonight and more than a few have wing issues, not as bad as Rex but the two lower feathers are longer than the others and curl upwards. If everyone is sure, I will be taking more to the auction Monday than I had planned :(

Ha! You might see Dad with some ducks at the auction drop off. I'm trying to decide how many ducks are going ... and if I'm sending the Freedom Mutt cockerels along, too. Too much squawking from the free rangers right now.

Good question about if improvements happen ... and if there is a difference between wing issues on males vs. females.

Too much chicken in the freezer and turkeys to butcher soon so all my older spent hens are going and the Dels. that are definite culls at this point. Might have one New Hampshire with wing issues as well.

Checked a few Del pullets tonight as well and am seeing some wierd things when I spread their wings. Just about to pull out the SOP and make sure I am defining primaries, secondaries and the axial inbetween them correctly. OK, just looked. I think Walt said that there should be 10 primaries and 10 secondaries with an axial inbetween. I have counted the number on the picture in the SOP, it is a little hard to tell in the picture but there are definitely not 10 and 10 unless I am half asleep.......... its possible :) Can anyone comment on this?

99% possibly 100% (a few are still pretty young) of my pullets have smut on their saddles/backs. Does anyone think this will molt out?

Oh how I wish I was ready to part with spent hens. I'm sure I'm feeding way too many birds. At least the layers are free ranging.

I'm still eating last year's turkey and won't allow myself cockerel until those are gone. I *think* we can dispense with cockerels more locally, but perhaps not on exactly my schedule (and I don't want unnecessary hormonal teenagers around).

The trouble with ducks is they are so hard to pluck properly. The more I think about it, the more inclined I am to get rid of all the ducks. I have a lot of thinking to do before Monday.

No I don't think they grow out of it and I think they are passing it on even when they don't have it. I think we need to keep finding the one that doesn't pass that gene on. I see a couple of pullets with some mild form but every F5 Cockerel has it to carrying degrees in the hatch I kept - don't know about the ones Micheal or Barred Rocker acquired - maybe they can comment.

What are you calling SMUT ? to much black or red bleed thru ?

Ok, cull it is. Wow, I am feeling a little stumped with these birds and not sure where to go from here..........

All my pullets are coloured like marnettes cockerals above (and my cockerals).
