I have about 100 Delawares right now. I love them.
Gentle giants. My older roos, Spartacus and Hercules, are the
most dignified chickens we have ever had but the juvies are still big clowns. Bought them from a Delaware breeder back in April 2008 (he was retiring) ranging in age from day old to 10 months. They are eating me out of house and home (even though they have free range of 30 acres, they never leave the back 2 acres) but they are gorgeous, even tempered birds and I am glad I chose them. Got lost of hens but way too many roos, so got to sell some of them off soon. We havn't tried the meat yet, but the eggs are huge and beautiful. Should have hatching eggs next year.

I picked the Dels mainly for their status as endangered via ALBC.
Gonna try to do my personal part to help the breed re-establish. Also, my great grandmother raised Delawares, so there was a nostalgic connection. I am trying to post some pics of them but haven't succeeded in getting that done yet.

I would love to see those! For now, my plans are to help with the effort of keeping this breed going. There is no comparison, temperament-wise at least, with the ones I had last year and the lines I have this year. Hopefully, my cockerel will stay even-tempered as he matures (he's 17 weeks).

I got a delaware cockerel and 3 pullets about 2 mos. ago at an auction. They were selling as Lakenvelders.... but never feathered out right. Somebody told me they were Delawares. I LOVE them. The Cockerel is hilarious and jumps up on my shoulder. Now the pullets are starting to do the same thing. They do make a weird noise... even at this age... they always seem to me to sound desperate about something. I always come hauling out of the coop thinking they are in trouble, only to find them standing there like..."what?" They are very sweet and I am going to build a new run and coop so they can try to make more someday. The only thing that worries me is hawks. I mean the darn chickens practically glow in the dark!
