DelawaresxCornish???

I also saw a really nice Dark Cornish roo's picture posted on BYC. But He was in New Zealand. I think it would be hard to get any of his offspring here.

Yesterday I went to the Idaho Bird Breeders Assoc Canyon County Show and Auction. I saw some Dark Cornish there and am glad I did or I would have wondered about mine.

They are not very big. I expected them to be much bigger. Now I'm not sure it would be a good cross. Very stocky birds but size wise...a Roo would be lucky to be able to mate with a nice big Rock or Delaware.

Where there's a will there's a way I guess. I saw some Beautiful Black Langshan. Gosh, I had no idea they were so big! Bigger than the Black Australorps by far. But they are black.

I would really like to stay white with the offspring however today I helped 8 chickens to Bird Paradise. I tried skinning for the first time and don't know if I will ever pluck again. Only if I succeed in making a Whizbang. Skinning wins hands down. I had all eight done in about 2&1/2 hours and that includes cleanup.

I weighted both of my Delcorn roos (Cornish roo x Delaware Hen) to see just how much they weighed. One weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces and the other 8 pounds 15 ounces. I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping for larger but they have laid back personalities that make up for that.

Sorry it took so long to get a weight I had to get new batteries. I took pictures but the batteries died in the camera half way through the picture shoot. I'm still working on it.

this is what i've been thinking about and researching as well. personally i prefer heritage breeds. so my goal is sustainable, pasture raised heritage birds that are decent sized and medium growth rate (like you are looking into). i'm thinking along the lines of some manner of cross between Brahmas (for size), Delawares (early maturing, good foragers), Faverolles (table qualities, winter laying), and maybe Marans (for that nice chocolate egg color). that's about as far as i have gotten for logistics though. i'm trying to maintain a dual purpose flock, so i'd like these to fit into that category as well.

it's probably not something i'm going to accomplish any time soon, but it's nice to see other people are working towards the same types of things!

Duane Urch has White Giants. He has outstanding stock and would be worth contacting. He doesn't have a website, so you'd have to call or email him directly. I have a new order form if you'd like me to post a copy of it.

are you planing on doing a terminal cross??? or a new breed???

i would like mine to be real close to the Cornish x rocks in growth rate... maby 2 or 3 weeks longer so they will have less leg problems and can forage better...
