Delayed Eggs

Well today is lockdown day at 7pm tonight. Not very happy with this hatch, down to 10 eggs out of the 14 lavender orpington eggs I started with. The 4 I got rid of showed no sign of development at all, guessing they were not fertile eggs. My main concern is that 3 or 4 of eggs look less developed than the others meaning the chick has not grown to fill the egg like the others. After reading back through recent posts it seems I am not the only one having this issue this time. I kept a close eye on my humidity and temperature, 30-40% and 99.5-100, no big swings in either during the whole process. Any ideas or input would be appreciated. Either way hatcher has been set up for 2 days now so I am ready for lockdown tonight holding a steady 65% humidity and 99.5. Maybe they will all hatch and I am just paranoid that I have done something wrong.

Maybe just slow growers, maybe they will be slightly smaller chicks, maybe parent stock issues, even possible differences in amount of albumin and yolk size? Different eggs from different hens? Too many possibilities, but they will probably hatch just fine.

I will say though that my lav orps tend to hatch a little late, even when incubating with others that hatch on time. Not sure if its breed related, or my flock, or what, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Good luck! Post some pics when you can.

I will definitely post pictures. Do you think I should wait an extra day to lockdown or just continue as I normally would?

I usually go by the air cells. If they look good, I'll go ahead any time after day 18 starts. If they look small and may benefit from an extra day, I'll wait till early-mid day 19.

You are safe to wait as long as there are no internal pips. Once they break into the air cell, humidity needs to be up.

Sounds good, thank you for the advice. We will be a couple hours into day 19 by the time I get home to switch them over to the hatcher so I should be good. Fingers crossed!

Ok so I assisted two stuck chicks last night. They do have leg issues. One is better than the other and can sit upright with its splayed legs. They were all sticky so I washed them in warm water and they were still alive this morning. I have 4 chicks with leg issues that hatched late. My dorking chick's one leg goes backwards when she tries to stand and just swims. The leg brace for splay leg does not seem to work in this case. Any ideas? Otherwise the is very healthy. Well now I know what to do next time with this incubator...now I know why people spend the extra cash on good ones. These cheap batora tend the fluctuate too much.

Yep, that's a common result with delayed hatchings. They just stay in there too long, and develop problems. (alot of times)

Here's a great link on leg issues. Many can be easily corrected, some can't. I culled a beautiful chick last week (and it wasn't even late hatching) so its horrible, but it happens.

The leg sticking backwards, be sure to read the section on slipped tendons. That's likely the problem..
Splay/spraddle legs and curled toes are easy fixes. The ones that have legs sticking straight out forward usually correct themselves within a few hours.

Thankyou so very very much that is exactly the information I was looking for. One of the chicks that I assisted actually is doing well and walking on his own still a little unstable but I have him walking on the shelf liner. Another one is close to being able to walk and sitting in a doughnut chair leg braced with the other two. The doughnut chairs are great getting them upright. Two have not been able to stand at all so the chairs are great although there was quite a bit of protest lol. I have a seperate box for the hospital ward...it is pretty funny. I will post a pic tomorrow. :)

I take it as a good sign when they protest the chair.

Best of luck to your chickies! Pics would be great!!
