Delayed or dud?

Hello, I've got a Langshen hen who is about 15 months old, and she has not layed a single egg. Should I be concerned? She is totally healthy otherwise. Maybe she is just late or is "deformed" inside and doesn't have any eggs. I have no idea. Just curious if there's anything I can do about it. I guess I should just give her time, right?

She should be laying by now. There may be extenuating circumstances preventing her, though.

If she's kept somewhere that she's deprived of having at least 12 hours of light a day, if she has a diet heavy on carbs and low in protein and calcium and supporting minerals, if she's ridden with parasites, internal or external, if she's subjected to a lot of stress such as barking dogs and constant traffic, both mechanical and human, if she been exposed to avian viruses that may be producing tumors, she may not lay. It could also be genetic - missing one of her working parts.

Look at all the factors and correct any that you can. She may surprise you yet.

Do you free range? Or have a large run? The other thing to look for is if she's found a place to lay that you haven't found yet. Although, at this point... that's going to be a large pile of eggs. Unless something is coming along in the over night and eating them.

Actually, she just layed her first egg yesterday. I guess she was just late. she had a 100 sq foot area to roam in and a bunch of nestboxes to choose from.

One of my Welsummers, Luna, FINALLY laid her first egg last week at the age of 47 weeks. It sure is a pretty first egg though!

+andreanar, I don't have a picture of her peewee egg....it became breakfast! She is laying pretty regularly but I don't think her eggs will get too much bigger! (as she is so small)
