As I learned recently, I also do not have Ameraucana's but EE's, mine are Black EE's if I choose to be "correct." The reason your's are EE's first and foremost is egg color, secondly, chicken colors. Ameraucana's lay pretty blue eggs, mine lay green and pink eggs. Mine do not have pretty green legs, either, but black- mine are hatchery chicks/now birds but there's your answer...color...egg and feather. But, I don't really understand it all yet, just learning! My Black Ee's look just like Jean's Black Ameraucana's only my roo has pretty reddish brown on his body, just a little and the eggs are not pretty blue...he's still Black Beauty to me And not a single blue egg, from three newly laying hens, the last pullet is nearly ready but the third girly to lay gives me a brown/pink egg.

I'll see if I can explain the difference between a true Ameraucana and Easter Eggers. There are only 8 accepted colors in the Ameraucana breed, which are Black, White, Blue, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten,Brown-Red, Buff, and Silver. If the parents of your chicks are both the same color, i.e. Black Roo + Black Hen or Wheaten Roo + Wheaten Hen, etc. then you have a true Ameraucana. But, if the parents of your chicks are from two different colors, i.e. Blue Roo + Buff Hen or White Roo + Silver Hen, etc. then you have an Easter Egger. If your bird is not pure for one of the 8 accepted colors then it is not a true Ameraucana it is an Easter Egger.

Hopefully, Pips & Peeps will pipe in here and correct me if I am wrong, but this is my understanding of what the difference is between a true Ameraucana and an Easter Egger.

Hummm, not to get OT but I don't understand how 2 pure ameraucanas could produce anything other than another ameraucana. If a black ameraucana and a blue one bred, it should still be an ameraucana, just not a recognized color. It's like saying my araucanas won't be araucanas if I let the colors mix. So, I'm curious as well.

Some prefer to call them Easter Eggers since they dont meet the color standard. Some call them non-standard colors, yet true Ameraucanas. Depends on perspective, I suppose.

Makes sense. I know my KW chickens are mutts, many different breeds went into a KW chicken. ( what I've been told anyway) So I guess to me a mutt would be a mixed breed. Like my dog!!

LOL I was wondering about that myself. I have a friend who has marans. She has black, cuckoo, blue, splash, copper, brichon, and wheaten. I have one of her blue X cuckoo. I was positive that is would still be a marans....just not a specific color. I am wondering how that works.
