Depressed

Awh! Thank you. I had given 5 to a friend to put under her broody hen 2 weeks ago. Not sure how it's going. She's been sick and working a lot. But that's another story...

I collected 2 today and 2 yesterday. Went ahead and used the 2 from yesterday to check fertility: 1 fertile, 1 infertile. At least now I know which ones will have a better chance.

I actually bought an assortments of eggs from mypetchicken.com. I wasn't sure how many I could collect and wanted to have enough to fill the incubator (Yes. Even after a first failed attempt, I am hooked.) They should arrive within a few days. Enough time to get the new bator set up and tested. Also bought the hygrometer and a better light.

Definitely a learning experience. Thinking I will record parts of the next set and continue with the weighing, etc. Keeping a log comes in handy.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and interest. Makes me feel good :)

I told you it's extremely addicting!! :gig I need to tell you that shipped eggs are a whole different ball game then local eggs. They require different techniques and over all are a lot harder. The air cells and the contents of the egg get damaged through the shipping process and it takes a lot of TLC to try and get shipped eggs to hatch. Huge difference from local. Let me ask you this, with the brinsea mini did you get the Eco or advanced model?

I heard hatching rates are lower on shipped eggs and can arrive damaged.

I bought the Advanced.

I have shipped Araucana eggs in my home made bator.... They were impossible to find locally, so I ordered some from California. Since it isn't terribly far (days drive for me), I'm hoping the eggs will hatch.... When they arrived, the box was in good condition, each egg was in a bubble wrap pocket with an open end for breathing. Only one was cracked. I candled them before setting, but since I'm a novice, I'm not sure about some of them.

I think you bought a good, highly recommended model of bator, and you would likely have better results( with shipped eggs) than me with my home made "contraption," as my fiance likes to call it

Your hygrometer is also a good purchase.

Keep us posted! I'm especially interested to know if you get any offspring from your beloved roo....

The only thing with the advanced and shipped eggs is that the auto turner in that one turns the eggs horizontally. If there's any damage to the air cell, you're going to want to keep them as vertical as possible in the beginning. Check the advanced and see if there is anyway to remove the turning tray. This is how I incubate my shipped in the mini Eco. After the first 24 hours I tilt the eggs from one side of the cup to the other.

Thank you for the advice!!

UPDATE ON EGGS: went to friends house where broody hen had been laying on 5 eggs for 2 weeks. Candles them and they look exactly like mine in the incubator. Looks like I can't fully blame the incubator. She gave me 18 Easter egger eggs so I weighed and set them in the Little Giant last night.

Got my Advance Brinsea last night as well, but sadly it did not come with a power supply. Amazon said I could either go buy one and they'd refund purchase amount, or I'd have to return the entire product and they'd send a new one. Sigh.

UPDATE! If the 18 eggs I set in the little giant on Thursday, I can see veining in 12!! So happy and excited!

I got the Brinsea but it didn't have the power supply. Called Brinsea and they are mailing me one. Looks like it'll get here Tuesday. Got notice that eggs shipped Saturday night. Extra excited.

Oh wow! That's incredible, well I'm really excited to see what happens here!

So sorry about the power supply... wouldn't you know.... now if you didn't need it, you would get it next day and they'd send you 2 of them!! It's cool that Brinsea is sending one, good on them!

So we wait and watch!

Argh!! I wake up and LG is 106. So aggravating. The reading on the LG is never consistent. Dear God I hope it didn't kill my eggs.

Eggs are at the post office. Hopefully I get the power supply today or tomorrow. Will need to let them rest anyway.

UPDATE: Candled the eggs again tonight. Saw one moving!! So exciting! Many eggs look better than yesterday. Only 3 of 18 scored a zero (no veining or signs of potential life). I will wait to candle again until day 10; I was just so concerned after my last fail and today's high temp that I had to check them again. I'm very pleased and excited.

Also, got my eggs from mypetchicken.com. They are awesome. I've called them a couple times and they are just so helpful and knowledgeable. Eggs arrived safe and sound; packed very well. None were broken or cracked...until my grandson grabbed one and dropped him :( It was a Salmon Favorelle. Was actually looking forward to that one. Anywho, I ordered 2 assortments and here is what they sent me:

Dominique - 2
Salmon Favorelle - 2
Chocolate Orpington - 1
Birchen Marans - 2
Blue/Black/Splash Favaucana - 1
Easter Egger - 2 (They labeled these as 'Fun and Funky'. I've got 7 already so I reckon I'm pretty Fun & Funky already. Lol)

Happy hatching!
