****. #6 looked like it was doing great: kicking and zipping. Almost zipped all the way around...I noticed the membrane was not broke like the others. Then it stopped kicking. Then it looks like it stopped breathing. I think it died. I pulled him out, moistened the membrane, peeled a bit back and hurried put him back in. Still no movement. I think he got all the way to the finish line and stopped. Gonna take a shower and try not to fret. Hard not to be sad and even harder not to try and do anything but I've got others pipping/zipping. Don't want to risk losing more than 1.
You have to wonder - what happened? For the chick to get that far and not make it.
Well, I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your hatch..... so far you're doing waaay better than me. I don't even have a pip yet
. After dark I'll candle a few and see if there's any life. In reality, it's only day 20 for me, but I was hoping for something....In any case, I'll keep them until Friday.
Which chicks are these? The BCM? After reading so many threads, I forget!
UPDATE: 9 have hatched. 1 died before getting completely out. Another died last night. He hadn't opened his eyes and was very sticky. He was born in the wee hours and most of it had dried before I woke up.
I've learned that humidity is a touchy thing. It did jump to 85 at one point. (Too high). I try to keep it between 65-70. I think when extra moisture was created when she many hatched and I added too much water at the wrong time. Feel bad for the lost 2 but the others are quite happy.
Definitely put marbles or something shiny in the water. It attacks them to the water.
UPDATE MPC: candled last night. Looks like the one I broke may not make it. Leaving in for now. Lock down is Saturday.
The spike in humidity won't hurt them. Your numbers will start to jump around some when the hatching begins. High humidity should help at hatch.... Now, the sticky chick, I'll need to read up on that...
Congratulations on your new chicks! Not too shabby
There were a few that were moving, maybe 3 -6. A few were so dark I could never see anything. And a few I kept because I just wasn't sure what I was seeing...
UPDATE: of the 16, 9 are great, 2 hatched and died within 24 hours, 2 didn't not successfully zip and 3 failed to pip at all. 50% seems really low but I love them all.
UPDATE MPC: set them Saturday and one hatched today! Total surprise! Heard chirping and worried something was wrong. Came in and noticed chirps coming from Brinsea, not brooder. So exciting! This one is the fun & funky. Will be fun to watch grow.
